I’m in love with the idea of intentionally creating a unique life- hearing the stories of people who are in the process of creating inspired lives for themselves is fascinating, and always a learning experience for me. I’m excited to share those stories here through the Creative Life interviews!

I’m excited to be interviewing one of my favourite bloggers & business owners today- Kaylah from The Dainty Squid! Kaylah has created a gorgeous life brimming with her personal style, love of thrifting, sweet cats & a beautiful handmade business that she shares with readers every day.

Please tell us a little about yourself, your business & your blog!

Hi! I’m Kaylah, a girl with ever-changing hair, a love for felines, photography and thrifting. I live in a little town in Ohio with my fiance and our four cats. I run a small business, called The Dainty Squid, where I sell pouches and clutches. I also run a blog under the same name where I write about my daily adventures and share lots of photos.

Have you always had a passion for sewing and using your hands, or was it something that you discovered on your own as you were growing up?

I’ve always had a passion for making things and using my hands. As long as I can remember I’ve been making things- be it paper crowns for everyone at Christmas get together when I was six or seven, plushies when I was a teen or bags now. I’m actually really curious to see what kind of creative endevours I gain an interest in as I get older.

What does a normal working day in your life look like?

A normal day starts with me waking up around 6, drinking a biiiig glass of chocolate milk, checking emails, spending time with my cats before venturing into my craft room to decide what I’d like to do that day. My days are normally pretty chill, I spend a lot of time watching movies while working and dancing during breaks!

Balancing blogging, your business & your home life must be tough! How do you manage it, and has how you manage it changed from when you first started out?

Oh, absolutely. The hardest thing for me is working while the house is a mess. If I know something is out of place in the living room or there is a bunch of laundry waiting for me to do then I have trouble working. So, something I’m still working on perfecting is mixing home life into work. Sew a little, clean a little, repeat. Relationship wise I have no problem mixing home life and work, I simply work while my fiance is at work and get off when he gets home. It works out perfectly!

Thanks so much Kaylah!

A Late Autumn Lantern Tutorial

by Kyla Roma on November 8, 2011

in crafts + diy, Hands On!

Looking for a simple way to light up your home up as the nights grow longer? This is a quick way to create an early winter centrepiece or a reading lamp for your favourite corner.

Supplies

10 inch branch ball (look by wreath making supplies in a craft store)
2-3 Pussy Willow branch stems (decorative, not real)
Small Mason Jar
Thin Wire (any kind)
Yarn
Scissors
A Candle or LED tea light

1. Using scissors or wire cutters, clip the pussy willow branches off the main branch into individual pieces.

2. Look over the 10″ ball- there’s a stiff wire structure that keeps its shape. Locate the center line of the ball where the wires inside the ball leave the widest gap, then rotate the ball on that center line, examining it for the section that has the fewest branches crossing through. This will be the base where your mason jar will slip inside the ball- mark it by tying a piece of yarn to keep your place.

3. Weave the pussy willow branches into the ball by gently tucking them under and over the branches. Try to create arcs or spirals that wrap around from one side of the ball over to the other to ensure you have an even distribution of the branches.

4. Head back to the section that you marked with yarn, where we’ll create an opening for the mason jar. First slide over any of the branches over that are flexible and nearest to the wire structure inside the ball- the idea is to create a gap the mason jar can fit through as naturally as possible. When you’ve slid the movable branches, secure them to the wire or other sturdy branches by wrapping them with wire. Make sure you start and finish with the end of the wire on the inside of the ball so it won’t scratch your furniture.

5. For any branches that you can’t move, snip the branch and secure it to another branch or the wire inner structure of the ball with a couple wraps of wire.

6. Test to make sure your mason jar will fit through the gap.

7. For a decorative look, wrap your mason jar in a complementary colour of yarn and securely tie it above the lip of the jar to keep it from falling down. You could also paint the jar for a frosted glass glow!

8. Place a candle in your mason jar & enjoy! I used three LED tea lights to get a bigger glow without having to worry about heat.

Best enjoyed while reading blogs or sipping tea!

When I started dreaming about quitting my day job to work with Leigh-Ann at Freckled Nest I knew that it would be more than I could imagine. More rewarding, more exciting and at times it’s also been more challenging.

The funny thing that I’ve found about owning a business is that many times I’ve found the most challenging thing I have to manage in my business is myself! That was especially true this summer when I found that it was hard to keep my focus on the big picture when there was so much that needed my attention from day to day. I needed to see the spaciousness of possibilities in the life I was creating, but I found it really hard to keep that wider perspective.

The fall has been such an energizing and inspring time in my world, and I’m so thankful to have found a balancing act that works better for me!  I’ve slowly stopped rushing to where the most urgent thing is and started thinking about what my idea week would look like, and then piecing out my days so I can work toward all different kinds of goals- big and small, urgent and slow burning.

It’s a great feeling to have found a way to balance my design work & supporting Freckled Nest’s team of designers- along with having time for family and friends again. Best of all I’ve been making more for myself & Jesse to connect and have fun together every week.

Next month I’ll be starting my second year as a full time creative- an owner and partner in Freckled Nest, and I feel like I’m starting to get a taste of what the next year will be like. It’s going to be a busy, positive & energized one that’s full of new discoveries and possibilities – along with a better balancing act – and I’m so excited to explore it day by day.

Apparently this weekend is going to be our first snow fall. We’ve been enjoying a gorgeous extended fall complete with beautiful and warm weather, and I’m not ready to let go of it (or my dresses!) so I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that I won’t have to adapt quite yet! I hope you have the kind of weekend you’re wishing for too :)

Best Case Scenario Me

by Kyla Roma on November 2, 2011

in The Guest Posts

Today I’m excited to introduce you to my friend, Sarah Von! She’s an inspiring lady who blogs at Yes and Yes, about embracing the things that get your heart racing and living a life that works for you. She lives with an adventurous heart and amazing sense of humour, and I know you’ll love discovering her & her encouragement to live your best life!        - xo, k.

You know how we’ve all had those roller coaster years? Where there were ups, there were downs, my gum fell out of my mouth, got stuck in my hair and I made a weird face when we went by that camera? And while I really, really try to rise to the occasion in tough situations, there are plenty of times when my coping technique goes something like this:

1) Freak the eff out

2) Say things like “Eff me? Double Eff you!”

3) Kick the dead horse

4) Poke the dead horse with a stick

5) Kick the dead horse some more

6) Eat carbs and cheese in all their varying and delicious forms

But after all that fussing and cheese-eating, I’m usually left bloated and disappointed in myself. Once I calm down, I try to use one of my favorite psychological tricks:

What would Best Case Scenario Me Do?

(Or WWBCSMD if you want a super catchy acronym.)

Who’s Best Case Scenario Me? She’s the version of me when I’m in top form, firing on all cylinders, making choices that I’m proud of. She doesn’t put up with that hot but shitty British boytoy, she doesn’t lay on the couch shaking Bacos into her mouth on a Friday night and she doesn’t sit idly by when people sprinkle their conversations with the word ‘retard.’ She’s who I am on occasion, and would like to be more often.

I really like this strategy. Instead of wondering how my mum/Madonna/Virgina Woolf would with deal with something, I try to think of a reaction that within my own lexicon. Sometimes it’s helpful to think about how people we admire would handle things, yes. But I think that can also take the focus away from the unique strategies that we surely have inside ourselves.

And any given situation can be dealt with any number of ways. What would Oprah do if she was moved by the plight of stray dogs come winter? Probably adopt the whole pound and give each dog a gold dog mansion. BCSM would volunteer at the pound … and knit tiny dog sweaters. If some Lothario harassed Madonna on the street, she’d probably wring his neck with her giant biceps. BCSM would narrow her eyes, sigh and say “Don’t do that, buddy.” I’ll never be able to channel these amazing women that I am not, but I can channel the me that I someday hope to be.

This mind game is also helpful because it forces me to think about the person I want to become and distance between her and who I am now. BCSM is a bit more active, a lot more patient, procrastinates less, is more tolerant in some areas of her life … and less tolerant in others. But she’s not so far from Sarah Von version 1.0. This gives me hope that I can get there someday and also reassures me that the version of myself that I am now isn’t too bad.

What is your Best Case Scenario Me like?

Cinnamon Buns

by Kyla Roma on November 1, 2011

in Hands On!, recipes

I love cinnamon buns. I lurve cinnamon buns. I’ve just had a hard time with them when it comes to, you know, making them. As an amateur baker I have a healthy respect/fear for breads. I know that it’s just basic chemistry and that it’s been around since before trains, electricity, and iPhones. Intellectually I know it’s not that complicated, but I’ve kept a safe distance after a making couple of very sad attempts at cinnamon buns a few years ago.

And at the same time? I really don’t like that something so delicious, flaky & delicate bested me.

A little while ago, my friend Holly tweeted about making cinnamon buns & they just sounded so good! I asked for the recipe she used & she sent it over with some encouragement & I already knew I couldn’t want to try it.

What do they say on kitchen stadium? ”Allez cuisine!” :)

After you’ve rolled out & cut the buns you let them expand into each other a little more…

Looking promising!

You even make a delicious glaze!

The results were so good! Just as flaky and sweet as I’d hoped, and I think they’ve even cured my fear of baking breads. This will only lead to good, carb-heavy, things. But those are the best kind of good things, don’t you think?

Try your hand at the recipe here

ps – What do you think of my new red hair? It’s crazy vibrant and I’m kind of in love with it! I think I’m going to stay a red head for the winter :)
