One of the things that I’ve been working on recently is setting aside dedicated time to hang out with Jesse. Owning Freckled Nest is my passion and the work that I do makes me so happy it’s hard to describe- but in day to day life, it’s like my business partner Leigh-Ann and I have a child together who we need to take care of from the moment she wakes up until she goes to sleep. It’s not really possible to balance that with the rest of my life- so instead I try to shape when I work around my life in a way that makes me as happy & energized as possible, and part of that means making sure I have lots of time to catch up with Jesse.

One of my favourite things is getting organized, especially when I can partner that with having beautiful illustration to admire. Illustration ranks up there with super powers to me- I would much rather be able to draw whatever I have in my mind than leap tall buildings in a single bound. I’ve been getting so excited to get calendars and planners set up for new year that I can’t get them out of my head these days! These are some of the beautiful pieces that have been catching my eye…

An Intention for December

by Kyla Roma on December 1, 2011

in Faves, Her Life, Recurring Posts, Stories About:

This December, I want to savour.

I want to slow down my thoughts so I’m not out of the moment before it’s started, and slow down my pace when I’m at home so I really feel every ounce of sweet moments with my husband or the success of a great work out instead of just rushing to the next thing. I want to be wrapped in the safety of friendship by catching up over wine and the fireplace channel (the best invention ever) and sharing the early morning ritual of warming cold hands on thin cups of hot coffee while car seat warmers (the second best invention ever) heat up before the rest of the car does. I want packages of beautiful things from small businesses all over north america to arrive every day, so I can give pieces of someone’s dream to my friends and family over the holiday. I want to memorize exactly how my puppies wiggle in mid-air when they start jumping as I open the door at the end of a long day.

Today I have a guest post (a guest recipe post! yum!) from my friend and this month’s featured sponsor Margarita from Adventures of a Fab Brunette. I met Margarita & her daughter two years ago in Vancouver and we had such a great time together! She’s a total sweetheart who makes a mean cupcake and I think you’ll really enjoy getting to know her & peek into her kitchen. xo, k.

The early winter is one of my favourite times of the year- the snow is fluffy & light without the world being too cold, it’s cozy enough to drink tea & read books all the time, and I can happily burrow into projects without feeling like I’m missing out on beautiful weather. It’s perfect for me!

Weekly Weak Knees no. 16

by Kyla Roma on November 25, 2011

One of the new features on my blog is that I have a “currently loving” section in my sidebar where every day or so I pop in an image and link to something I can’t pass by without sharing. It’s a pretty feature that feels like I’m passing notes to anyone who checks my blog every day, and I hope you enjoy it enough to make it part of your routine!

These are my favourite links from the past couple weeks, click on the pictures to explore…

I’m in love with the idea of intentionally creating a unique life- hearing the stories of people who are in the process of creating inspired lives for themselves is fascinating, and always a learning experience for me. I’m excited to share those stories here through my Creative Life interviews!

Today I have an interview with Danielle from Sometimes Sweet, a positive, heartfelt and infinitely likeable blogger I’ve been addicted to reading for a very long time. This year Danielle traded being a high school English teacher for being a full-time stay-at-home home, and she’s a lovely example of the happiness that following your heart and being true to yourself can bring you…

With Black Friday coming up quickly and the Christmas decorations already up in my house, it’s been hard to keep holiday gifts off my mind and even harder to avoid thinking about the costs that the next couple of months will bring. It’s such a strange time of year- I love buying the gifts & finding just the perfect thing for each person, but at the same time it’s tough to feel good about spending the money when I’ve got a big list to get through.
