Little House on the Prairie

This Saturday morning I went down to get my coffee and was stopped dead in my tracks when I looked at my deck! Every now and then when it gets cold enough in the winter time you get to see a really cool thing happen: sublimation!

Do you remember your water cycle from high school science? Sublimation is when something goes from being a solid straight to being a gas- so in other words, the sun was at the perfect angle and I could actually see snow evaporating in the sunbeams!

This weekend my mom and step dad tied the knot in our little family cabin in the middle of the snowy prairies. We had lots of fun and food, cuddled my mom’s puppies and laughed over champagne- it was a heartfelt and sweet start to their new lives together. I offered to play photographer for the day, and my mom was so beautiful that I had to share! Here’s a peek into their day…

There’s no denying that we’ve been incredibly lucky to have such a long fall- but since the snow started falling and staying on the ground, it’s been an adjustment! My winter clothes have been hauled out of the basement to replace the shorts I hadn’t quite packed away yet, and there have been a couple of times where I’ve scraped ice off my windshield with a CD when I couldn’t find the scraper. But the biggest adjustment in the winter is definitely for the dogs- the days of running outside casually and back in again are decidedly over, and walks become a bit of a production thanks to their blankets and doggy boots.

Every November the very fabulous November campaign raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer research, and the mustache growing madness ensues. This year I was lucky to be contacted by the campaign, and had a great talk with the Canadian organizers about how women (or Mo Sista’s) can get involved.

I made my donation to the Movember campaign at the beginning of the month, but I couldn’t let November pass by without showcasing my favourite models of mustaches.

I like the Macho best, it turned my sleaze factor up to 11 almost immediately, don’t you think?

I love when the weather starts to get colder because something happens to the animals in my life… they become cuddle monsters! It’s like they know the winter is coming and want to be firmly in the good books before the snow flies so they don’t become strays between now and then. Every morning this fall while I’m getting my coffee, the puppies have been milling around, begging for hugs and staring at me with eyes that say “We adore you and being inside when it’s cold out, Lady Who Feeds Us. Do you remember how soft I am? Do you remember how badly you wanted a dog when you lived in an apartment? DO YOU? Of course you do!!”

This Halloween was quieter than last year, and after a busy fall I was very thankful for a weekend in! I keep saying that I want to take it easy on the weekends- spending less time working on blog design and spending time with friends, Jesse, and relaxing instead. So this weekend I tried it out… and I discovered my new favourite guilty pleasure, Intervention. Then suddenly I’d knit two giant cowls and the weekend was gone! Funny how that happens, isn’t it?

With the days getting shorter and colder in the prairies some of my favourite summer things are starting to come to an end. It’s finally too cold at night to read on the porch without a blanket, scarves are mandatory in the mornings and skirts are more comfortable with tights to buffer against the chill in the air. It’s that beautiful time of year when during the day you can almost forget that it’s fall (if you pretend the leaves haven’t fallen!) and at night you can bundle up with a blanket and cup of hot tea and be perfectly cozy.

When this weekend came I could hardly believed the week had raced by already! I love those weeks when everything is packed just tightly enough – you’re busy and “in it” the whole time, but magically everything can still get done. There were multiple trips to the post office that made me thankful I had Friday off, and that I had enough fancy packing tape on hand- I love sending out pretty packages.

This weekend there were:

. E-mails sent
.Cinnamon buns eaten
.Blog posts planned
.Dogs cuddled and walked
.Halloween candy devoured
.Afternoon bubble baths enjoyed
.Gratuitous amounts of Bones (S3) watched
.A Little Thistle etsy photos taken
.Stamps bought
.Cards written
.& wine enjoyed.

I’ve been in a really introspective and quiet place for the past few days, and as a blogger that puts me in an odd situation- but I’m working on it. And the reading & bubble baths? They really didn’t hurt :)

Did you fit in some relaxation this weekend?
