I’m not someone who pushes their beliefs or habits onto other people, for the record I think that kind of stuff is just hopelessly boring. I also have no interest in becoming a food blogger, but when I posted and tweeted about our split kitchen the one big question I got back was definitely: “….thanks for the vague bullet points but seriously, HOW do you manage?!” and in posting about my vegan challenge there have been a lot more questions.

Being vegetarian has always been pretty easy for me, especially since it’s what I grew up with, but over the past year I’ve gone from being a healthy vegetarian who watches her protein and vitamins to a carb-etarian who lives on potatoes and pasta. I’ve tried to be healthier, I participated in a six week health blogging challenge and focused on making progress with my habits. But all winter I knew that how I was eating wasn’t healthy, and I had to get back to viewing my healthy vegetarian eating as something fun and manageable instead of as a hassle.

I’m a big fan of food. I love to cook and bake, and I love eating out. One of the best things about My Prairie City is that we’re made up of so many immigrants that we have food from every corner of the world, and we’re so close to so many farmers you can eat local without even thinking about it. If you’re feeling hungry and are downtown, there’s authentic east Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, Irish pub fare, Mexican, Japanese and vegan restaurants all within walking distance. It’s my favourite part of the city, aside from the amazing arts scene here.

I guess it must say something about me that instead of making cookies I’ve started to opt for 3 hour long multi-phase weekend projects…but being that soon The Prairies will start to bake and crack like clay in the sun, my days where I can play over the stove and live to tell about it are limited. I’m trying to take advantage before cooking on the stove will give me heat stroke.
I love making simple, old fashioned food – almost as much as I love simple, old fashioned stories, houses, people, and cities. I live in a 100 year old home, what can you expect? So the pleasure of straight forward comfort food is never lost on me, and neither is the indulgence of eating anything that involves home made dough when it’s still warm from the pot.

This weekend was entirely a whirlwind – between cupcake baking, cleaning the house within an inch of its life, making crepe flower pins to help with re-stocking my etsy store, puppy management, and browsing the job sites for my dream job (as yet to be determined)….
Well, the weekend kind of evaporated out from under me, in as dreamy a way as that’s possible.

The week after we moved into our home in July our washer and dryer were delivered to replace what you see at stage right there (far left). And they didn’t fit in our basement. We put re-purchasing off, calling it a savings, until last week Mister informed me that the old dryer in the basement had moved into the Denial stage of grieving and, while it wouldn’t admit it was dying, was now taking FOUR HOURS to bring our clothes to 75% dry.
I believe on the information superhighway, we call that a “fail”.

I got into canning last year when I found a recipe for High Bush Cranberry Jelly that my grandmother used to make when she was alive. High bush cranberries grow rampantly at my grandfather’s farm (other side of the family) and though it’s a long process it meant fresh cranberry jelly with Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners and a year of tasting something my family thought died with my grandma.
When we got engaged the favours were something I put a lot of thought into, and some kind of jelly seemed like a great way to really personalize the whole thing. No putting our initials on M&M’s for us! We were going to throw down some sweat equity…..and thank god we’re having a small wedding, that’s all I can say.

Two of my favourite things about having people over to the house are:
- There is now enough space for three or more people to come over, sit down, and eat a meal.
- I can try out new recipes!!
Usually with work I’m pretty beat in the evenings which, when combined with the fact that I’m an early to bed, early-ish to rise type means that during the week 8:00 pm + 1 beer = Kyla passed out underneath the table, sleeping like a child.
