Little House on the Prairie

Last year was our first full summer in the little house, and since we had a little time for a weekend project we decided to put in a vegetable garden. Mister built four four foot by three foot plots, we grabbed mulch and compost and soil, and built a little place for me to grow veggies and herbs.

Kitchen gardens hold a special place in my heart. I love how old fashioned and relentlessly practical they are, and growing up my Baba’s garden was one of my favourite places. I loved pulling out peas and carrots for snacks, and when I was really small I would hide under her huge rhubarb plant with her tabby cat Chuckers, and pretend that I was Alice in Wonderland and that Chuck was my tiger guard.

New Rules:

- Crocheting is fun, but knitting is still on top for now

- Popsicles are a summer food group

- As summer baking that doesn’t overheat the house, tarts are now mandatory

- When Mister suggests that we rearrange all the rooms on the second floor so we have a small little bedroom and a huge giant craft room, don’t ask questions. Just go with it.

- Dream big and out loud, and smile when people don’t get it. There’s no rule that says they have to :)

These past few days have been hot. The kind of hot where the distance is hazy and blurred, and mosquitoes hang in the air like buzzing marionettes. The kind of hot that brings street festivals, ferris wheels and popsicles…

I love a good long weekend! The queen was in town on Saturday and there was an energy in the air with all the security and fanfare downtown. Mister and I went on a proper date to a beautiful little pub, and ended up talking for a very long time and finding out some new (silly & random) things about each other that were really fun. We always make sure we have our “couple” time and are talking about the big and little things, but having been together for 5 years & lived together for 4 it’s always fun when you have to do a double take and say “Wait a minute, you what?!”

This weekend might not have actually been centered entirely around my shoulder – there were also birthday parties & dinners & running through thunderstorms too, after all – but it sure felt like it was!

Going down for my second appointment I was really excited, and a lot more prepared than the last time. I ate a huge lunch before hand, brought movies for distractions (Jurassic Park & Hot Fuzz), and instead of water I brought gatorade and a slurpee- anything with sugar to help keep my energy up. I sat for just over two hours for the outline, and I knew the colour would be longer but I had no idea how long I would be able to sit for. I wanted to get it finished though and while I’m definitely not brave, I have determination coming out of my ears.

This week has been one of my busiest in a long time! I started going to a knitting group full of  young, fun women in a beautiful space downtown. It was great to break out my needles and work on a project over cupcakes, korean food and great conversation. I tried to beat the heat and stay away from the mosquitoes- I’m convinced that if they bite my tattoo it will mess up them finishing it on Friday! On Saturday I was a model for some really cool local photographers I’m going to start shooting with, and we staged a wedding where I was the bride. It was a lot of fun & I can’t wait to see the pictures! On Sunday we hung out with my Dad on the deck, eating perogies and trying to keep the puppies out of the garden.

After a week of over time on a special project  (I would love to share, but work = insurance = I would have to bring you espresso before I relayed the details) I was dreaming of the weekend by Tuesday, so when it finally came around I couldn’t have been happier. We caught up on sleep after Mister’s birthday party, he ate rice krispie squares for breakfast to ease into being twenty nine, and I left messages for my little sister half way around the world.

These days….

I’m waiting for the spring colours to bloom. While it’s very warm my city hasn’t had the “technicolour” switch (located outside the city limits) switched on yet, and I really couldn’t tell you what they’re waiting for.

I’m taking some time to sit out in the sun on the weekend, because I’m officially more fair than the fairest foundation I’ve been able to find. I’m looking forward to looking slightly more lifelike soon.

I’m learning to draw. I’m not very good at it at all, but I think that makes it more fun.

Last month Mister and I came thisclose to selling the little house. A friend did a walk through, and loved it. We got thinking about all its drawbacks and how cramped we can feel here sometimes. So we even made a plan B- we talked with a realtor, cheered over the list price she recommended in case our friend didn’t buy, and got fired up.

We started thinking things like:

Who can live in this little house!? It’s smaller than our last apartment.

And it was decided. We would move. We felt very decisive and adult.

The past week my prairie city has been warm. Beautifully and wonderfully warm, so you don’t have to brace when you go outside.  I love this time of year because it reminds me of how relative everything is in life. In the fall -7°C  (19°F) was a looming and frightening temperature that had me bundling up and worrying over the winter to come, but now it’s a beautiful lapse that means I can pop outside with the puppies to walk up the block without a jacket. Suddenly -7°C is an invitation to go out and play in the world.
