When I was little, my mom would always put on a fresh pot of tea when I got home from school. Since then tea has been one of my favourite treats, and with fall weather getting closer I’ve been making a daily ritual of brewing tea in the afternoons. Buying loose tea is an old fashioned experience that I really love, but it can be a little overwhelming unless you have a little…

I thought I’d lend a hand in that department!

Crocheted Bow Headband

crocheted by headband

Last week I bought some really cute autumn coloured yarn- the mustard yellow is my favourite right now. I’ve been wanting a new headband, so I grabbed my crochet hook and started working on a simple bow design for my first crochet project of the fall.

I really love knitting, but I started playing with crochet last year and since then I’ve had more fun with it every time!  I love how easy it is to make small pieces and to make colourful patterns. I love knitting for large pieces, but crochet is quickly becoming my second love. I’m even thinking about making myself a granny square blanket this winter and I’ve been finding some really beautiful patterns that are super tempting…

Lately I’ve been trying to snack smart while I’m working (to avoid those sugar crashes I mentioned yesterday!) and in the middle of summer without central air conditioning I’ve been finding it hard to grab anything other than fruit or a granola bar. I started looking into no bake and vegan recipes to see if there was anything tasty and simple that I could find, and when I came tasted the results of these chocolate peanut butter chews I had to share them!

Recently a good friend of mine came to me asking for advice about how she could transition from her full time job into having a more creative day to day life. It gave me a lot to think about, because I think that especially online there is a lot out there about how much more wonderful everyone’s life would be if they quit their job and started working for themselves. Those stories are obviously extremely inspiring to hear about, and I’m not immune to that- in fact spent a lot of time over the past year daydreaming, planning and praying that I could make that leap myself- and when I did (part one, part two) I was ecstatic!

Leek and Blue Cheese Bruschetta Toasts

by Kyla Roma on July 12, 2011

in Hands On!, recipes

I’ve been wanting to learn how to make more new savoury vegetarian foods, and I’ve started with a challenge to myself to make two new recipes each week. So far it’s been working out really well, and it has been a great reason to get home from the studio on time – which is a skill that I’m usually lacking in. Last week I found an amazing looking recipe for Leek and Blue Cheese Toasts that looked like a piece of caramelized heaven. I love the strong flavour of  blue cheese, and I tried my first leek this winter (I know, I know!) so I thought it would be a good start to make up for lost time.

Tiny Home Succulent Garden

One of the best things about my transition job when I was moving from being full time working for someone else to being full time self employed was that being at a florist’s shop let me work with my hands in a creative way and learn a little about floral design while having some more financial security. Putting bouquets and boutonnieres together for weddings was so much fun, and lately I’ve been seeing a really beautiful trend when I log into Pinterest.

In my mind, I’m not a fashionable girl. I love putting together good outfits and I’ve even tried fashion blogging if only to push myself into being more comfortable with it, but in my mind that doesn’t cut it. When it comes to fashion, I look at the outfit posts I see on blogs and how the bloggers always look like they’ve just drifted into frame between a perfect walk in the park and a perfect evening out and a voice in my head says:

“You are not a fashionable girl, for fashionable girls it’s effortless”

For the past few months I’ve been tracking how I spend my work days with a really cool application called Klock (a great free alternative is Toggl) and it’s been helping me make sure I’m spending my time wisely and helping me get an idea of how long my projects take me. But a funny side effect is that it’s make me very aware of how I’m spending all of my time, not just when I’m working. Now that it finally feels like spring in the Canadian Prairies (guys, it’s actually WARM here now!! Flowers are budding!) I’ve been getting excited to do some spring cleaning, only this year I’ve gone a little non-traditional.

I usually have a hard time staying committed to healthy living, and since last summer it’s been a big challenge for me. The problem that I run into is that if I don’t meal plan every week I revert to making what’s easiest- and because I’m vegetarian, easy is usually code for carb heavy food.

Pasta and potatoes. It’s a problem.

Now that the summer is right around the corner and being outside is fun again I’ve been re-committing myself to being more active, and to learn some healthy habits that will stay with me for good. Just to make sure it works I have a two part plan!
