Since the spring I’ve been trying to stretch- with my creativity, with my confidence, and with every inch of me that I can muster. When I turned twenty five something clicked in me, and I knew in my bones that I wanted to make this year one of giant growth. I wanted to keep waking up day after day, feeling like I’m closer to the girl I want to be. A big part of that for me is attitude and confidence. I’ve been working on it over the past year, but it hasn’t come as easily as I wanted it to.

Six Months + Six Dresses has been a monthly-ish dress feature since the spring, and initially it was a huge stretch for me. I felt awkward and out of place in front of my camera, and had trouble coming up with outfits. I procrastinated the shoots and wished I could skip posting most of them, but I kept going and hoped that I would stretch my comfort zone, get more confident and could have a picture I’d be really proud of.

And finally, I do!

(Mal is also interested in fashion blogging, apparently!)

High Waisted Skirt: $7
T-Shirt: $15
…which means it’s not technically a dress, but I’m not a technical person ;)

This was such a fun little fashion blogging project and I’m so glad I pushed through it! Thanks so much to the girls who played along with me for all or some of the months, and for everyone who left encouraging words. I’m definitely not fashion blogger material, but moonlighting has been a lot of fun.

For the past six months I’ve been working on a little challenge I made up called Six Months + Six Dresses. Because I’m an unreformed jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, this summer I’ve been making a big effort to try and have more dresses in my closet and to try and get more comfortable with having more “fashion blogger” style pictures taken.

It’s weird, I’m fine with face pictures, but fully body pictures? Suddenly all I can think about is how I have no where to put my hands! And then I make awkward faces and it’s all over. I’m an enthusiastically bad model, and end up posing as a T-Rex most of the time someone goes to take my picture.

What? They’re fierce, isn’t that what you’re supposed to go for?

Dress number five is one of my favourites- a Dickie’s number I picked up at Target last year, the tiny stripes and ruffles just shouted state fair material to me and I felt perfectly at home among the Clydesdale’s and roasting corn.

This month I’ll be finishing the project with one final post! I’m not sure where that leaves my fashion blogging career, but I think that over the winter I’ll keep them up in a less formal way- maybe I’ll start showing my favourite cozy accessories.

I hope you’re enjoying the last days of summer!

Judging by the @ replies on twitter I’m the only one actually experiencing Fall weather right now, I’ll try to send some your way :)

It’s dress sharing time again- and I can’t believe I only have two months left! Is the summer that far along already? Maybe this winter I’ll have to do Six Months + Six Parkas… though, somehow the appeal just isn’t the same.

Dress number four isn’t just thrifted, it’s also a walk on the wild side for me. I’m not much of a prints person, I tend to stick to layers of light solid colours instead, but just for fun I tried stepping out of my comfort zone a little.

Also, I swear the lighting here is a little weird, and that I’m not one of the Cullen’s.

Dress – thrifted for $7

Switching to thrift shopping for my dresses has been such a relief, I’m getting to the point in summer where travel plans and major purchases have been made so I’m light on spending money for fun “just for me” things. But $7 I can definitely do!

The girls who have been playing along with me are just too cute for words, so I thought I’d show you some of my favourite pictures of theirs so far – click on their pictures to visit them.

I bought it at H&M in Seattle for about $35. Being at the half way point of my mini-fashion blogging challenge is exciting and I definitely feel like I have more than my usual jeans & t-shirts to draw on when I’m going out. I’ve bought the first three dresses new, so from here on out I’ll be finding them at thrift shops – now that I’m more comfortable buying dresses in general, I’m graduating to vintage.

It’s that time again! Finding a dress this month wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be- while April was amazing, since then the prairies have become extremely cool, cloudy and rainy. I went thrifting four times to no avail! I think everyone was too cold to be pulling out their summer clothes….but when they do I will be there!

{bought new for $55}

Dress number one was fun, but also extremely short and the material was thick! This is much more summery and I love the muted colour. I think it’s perfect road trip material. And I am *resolved* that next month I will have something of a tan and it will be sunny and warm enough to lose the tights and take this outside!

I’m excited to head out on our trip soon, and I’m demanding that our first stop is at Target. I can’t wait to see what they have in the way of summer dresses! That store is such a dreamy place, especially when you only get to go a few times a year.

Make sure you check out the other lovely ladies who posted this month! Ashley, Becky, Georgia is your friend, Miss Mel(odramatic), Awmber, Jennifer, Jenna & Megan.
So here’s the thing: Sometimes I’m not very good at being a girl.

I’m good at a lot of the parts of it, but looking well pulled together and cute in the way I dress isn’t really something I do on a regular basis. I’m kind of relentlessly awkward. It’s a good kind of awkward – a Hel Looks, vaguely boyish, confident kind of awkward that I’m really comfortable in, but this summer I want to have a more in my closet than skinny jeans, cardigans and t-shirts to draw on every day.

I’ve been trying to start looking a little more fashionable for the past couple of years, diligently sorting through my drawers to get rid of things that just don’t work or that I just don’t wear, and only buying things I really love that will last. And now that my basics & foundation pieces are covered? I want sun dresses. And not just any dresses, I want unique ones that suit me, that I can be comfortable in, that are fun, and that I can love.

What better way to re-vamp my summer wardrobe than by making it a challenge? So I’m resolved to buy (& show you) one new or thrifted dress every month until the fall comes around.

And without further ado, here’s Dress Number One!

Ideal for attempting to train feral dogs in

I'm good at a lot of the parts of it, but looking well pulled together and cute in the way I dress isn't really something I do on a regular basis. I'm kind of relentlessly awkward.
