the sweet & humid kind

These past few days have been hot. The kind of hot where the distance is hazy and blurred, and mosquitoes hang in the air like buzzing marionettes. The kind of hot that brings street festivals, ferris wheels and popsicles…

I love a good long weekend! The queen was in town on Saturday and there was an energy in the air with all the security and fanfare downtown. Mister and I went on a proper date to a beautiful little pub, and ended up talking for a very long time and finding out some new (silly & random) things about each other that were really fun. We always make sure we have our “couple” time and are talking about the big and little things, but having been together for 5 years & lived together for 4 it’s always fun when you have to do a double take and say “Wait a minute, you what?!”

I think he must have felt that way when I said I wanted to get a big giant tattoo ;)

This weekend we went to a huge Canada Day street festival full of live bands and mini-doughnuts, visited friends who have opened up a beautiful shop, listened to friends on the radio, and ate crazy amounts of watermelon. I finally received a big supply order I’ve been waiting for and made a huge push on jewelry making for my future etsy store. I have so many pretty necklaces hanging on my wall, and it made me feel like I’m finally getting somewhere! The wait time on international shipping has been killing me. To celebrate we escaped the heat and hit a matinee showing of Get Him To The Greek in a theatre we had all to ourselves.

I’m even back on track with my couch to 5k training and I’m sticking to a regular schedule like I’ve never been able to before. With the early mornings and late nights, it’s all a little exciting and dizzy.

Doesn’t everything seem to happen in the summer? Thank goodness the days are longer.

ps – hope all of you charming American’s are recovering from a wonderful 4th of July! See you later this week <3

I recently found out that J was in an electro-punk-metal band that went on tour. After three years together, you would think this would have come up sooner! It’s fun to learn little things about each other that are totally shocking.

An electro-punk-metal band?! I have to ask Mister that now, just to be sure! ;)

Yay for Buffy! I love that show – my sister and I just finished watching the whole series back to back, it was a mammoth episode. I hope you have as much fun geeking out as we did!

I definitely do, but a lot of the “obvious” ones :)

My favourites are TAM, The Moth, RadioLab, Crafty Pod, Threadbanger & Stuff You Missed in History Class. I’d love to know yours too! Let me know if you have a second?

Maybe we can trade for a weekend? It’s still so chilly in Portland when we’re supposed to have gorgeous summers!

Lovely photos, and I’m glad that you and Mister enjoyed the latest date night. :)

25 Kyla Roma July 6, 2010 at 9:27 pm

We don’t need to trade, you can come bunk in my craft room for a while and help me launch my damn etsy shop! lol It’s too slow going as it is, and I make a mean mojito ;)

Whenever I learn new things about Eric I seriously get the BEST feeling because it just makes the relationship seem new and exciting again! We had a lot of those moments when we were in Europe.

Reply

Sind you were 15? That’s amazing Mel! That must take some skill at this point :) I already take it for granted that Mister doesn’t just know what I’m thinking all the time.

We didn’t start dating until I was 26 so there were a number of years where we didn’t have much contact (like when I lived in Montreal). Still, we were good friends in high school and I really have known him for a long time.

I love how you’re so busy but yet still manage to make it seem like you’re simply enjoying life stress-free & having all the time to yourself. It’s also fun being productive!

Reply

37 Kyla Roma July 6, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I’m trying to make that happen, honestly it’s a bit of a day to day battle. I’m working a ton but I’m always trying to make sure that Mister & I get enough time together and that I’m taking time away from work for myself too. But I’m addicted to finishing projects too… lol

It’s all about finding balance, right?

It is hot & humid here as well. When I got back to my condo tonight, it was 87 inside. Talk about living in a hot box. Oy vey it is goign to be tough to sleep tonight! :P Hopefully the wall unit in my living room cools things down a bit!

Everything does seem to happen in the summer, doesn’t it? I wake up earlier and collapse into bed exhausted at a later time than I do in the winter! I think the fact that we get more sunshine makes me feel like I need to pack so much more into my day.

Happy July, can’t wait to see these necklaces you are working on!

No we didn’t! It got so hot so fast, and there were all of these severe weather warnings out that we decided not to chance it. Totally lame on our part. She’s in her 80′s and she’s way tougher than we are, it’s a fact.

Those moments are just the best! I’m so excited to be at that place in my marriage eventually. We started dating when I was 19 so we’ll hit the together for 10 years before I git 30, which just seems kind of cool to me :)

There really is a different energy to summer that I don’t feel the rest of the year. I just want to stay up later and do more and go on as many adventures as I can before it’s time to hibernate again.

Reply

53 Karen July 29, 2010 at 6:27 pm

You really know how to capture the mood of summer both in writing and in pictures. And I loooove watermelon. But often I end up not buying one because they’re so heavy.
