How to make a custom chalkboard

by Kyla Roma on July 8, 2010

in crafts + diy, Hands On!

I’ve been trying to live with a little more intention these days, instead of always playing catch up I want to get things done. Instead of always responding, I want to initiate! I’m very visual so I wanted something in my craft room that would help me to stay on track and that I could update. A custom chalkboard is the perfect thing…

Supplies:

- picture frame
- small off cut of masonite (very thin particle board, a little thicker than the backing of an Ikea bookcase, but that would work too if you can steal some!)
- acrylic paint (in your favourite colour)
- chalkboard paint (available at big box hardware stores)
- hand saw
- sheet of sandpaper
- wire cutter & jewelry or floral wire (optional)

1. Grab a picture frame! Mine was thrifted for $5. It doesn’t have to be pretty, but look for texture on the frame to add detail.

2. Slide the backing and glass out of the frame. If your frame is second hand, depending on its condition you may want to re-wire it. If you do, clip off the wires with wire cutters and be sure to wear gloves if you’re handling rusted metal. I left the nails in the back of mind to hold in the chalkboard, but you could get fancy at the hardware store if you like :)

3. Put the glass down on a piece of thin masonite and trace around it. This will be your chalkboard template! Disgard your glass carefully. Be nice and keep your garbage men in mind.

4. Use a saw to cut through the masonite, and sand the edges after you’ve made your cuts to ensure a smooth edge.

5. Paint out the trim with your favourite coloured paint, and while it’s drying paint your masonite with chalkboard paint. It requires a number of coats and a long drying time so be patient & follow the instructions on the can.

6. When the painted pieces are dry, slide your chalkboard into the painted frame and secure it inside. Mine fit perfectly, but you may need your original frame’s backing or cardboard to shim it in for the perfect fit. You don’t want it to move when you’re writing!

7. Wire the back (if necessary) using pliers and jewelry or floral wire

8. Hang it up & enjoy!

I love this because it’s functional, simple, and really cute. You can paint the frame in a colour that’s as bright or muted as you like, but I chose one that would go with the faded chalk colours I’ll be using to write on it.

And I kind of love looking at it when I’m drinking my coffee and checking my e-mail- who doesn’t need a little nudge in the right direction every morning?

Total Cost: $5 – $30 depending on what you have around the house

That is so freaking cute! I love the use of chalk boards like that. I once saw a kitchen where they had painted the walls with that chalk board paint and it looked so darn cute!

I love it! If only I was remotely crafty … We’re planning on painting a wall in Topher’s room with chalkboard paint when he’s bigger. I guess that’ll have to do :D

I love it! There’s another blogger I follow who makes chalkboards, too. Have you heard of her? The blog is http://playing-grown-up.blogspot.com/ and her etsy shop is http://www.etsy.com/shop/PlayingGrownUp

It’s all too cute! :)

This is amazing! I am absolutely inspired by you Kyla. Do you come up with this stuff on your own? This is just beautiful! I love it. OH, and I am so with you on the whole living-with-intentionality thing. Absolutely.

Very fun! I have some picture frames that are home to two lovely mirrors. The frames themselves have great texture…I was thinking about doing this on the back of the mirrored frames. Keeping the front a mirror with a pretty frame, the back would be a chalkboard…I hope it turns out okay! I love fun DIYs! & thanks for the lovely blog comment doll! <3

Dude. You’re a genius! And totally psychic! Yesterday I was looking on etsy for a cute chalkboard to write out our meals on — and I put this on my favorites:

Where was this information when I needed it 7 years ago!? Haha! I was on the hunt for an easy way of assembling a cute chalkboard for my son’s room, but never landed on a set of instructions that produced something I liked. This would have been perfect. :)

Kudos to you for helping out other moms who may be facing the same predicament I was in several years ago.

Nicely done, lady. I cannot stand the sound of chalk writing on a chalkboard though, so I will not be participating in this craft :)

I have been wanting to create a chalkboard quote board for a really long time. This is such a great post! But, I do hate chalk, but I could find some way to use it without actually touching it. I hate hate hate the feel of chalk.

I think I may do this, but put my favorite quote, and then.. hrmm.. maybe spray acrylic over it to avoid it ever being nudged off, to make it a permanent piece?

I did something very similar to this recently, actually!

Here’s a quick post to see what I’m talking about:
http://lifeisawantad.blogspot.com/2010/07/customization.html

I took down one of my tired prints, gave the frame a quick painting, popped the glass back in, and stretched some fabric along a piece of backing. Voila, writing surface. I think it’s adorable because the fabric looks nice even when I’m not using it. :)

Congrats on being the spotlight for Sometimes Sweet this week! I was really surprised to see someone from my neck of the woods on there, especially since I’m going to be seeing Rich in a few weeks!
