Six Months + Six Dresses: Number Two

by Kyla Roma on May 17, 2010

in challenges, Craft, Fashion & DIY, Hands On!, six months six dresses, Stories About:

It’s that time again! Finding a dress this month wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be- while April was amazing, since then the prairies have become extremely cool, cloudy and rainy. I went thrifting four times to no avail! I think everyone was too cold to be pulling out their summer clothes….but when they do I will be there!

{bought new for $55}

Dress number one was fun, but also extremely short and the material was thick! This is much more summery and I love the muted colour. I think it’s perfect road trip material. And I am *resolved* that next month I will have something of a tan and it will be sunny and warm enough to lose the tights and take this outside!

I’m excited to head out on our trip soon, and I’m demanding that our first stop is at Target. I can’t wait to see what they have in the way of summer dresses! That store is such a dreamy place, especially when you only get to go a few times a year.

Make sure you check out the other lovely ladies who posted this month! AshleyBeckyGeorgia is your friend, Miss Mel(odramatic), Awmber, JenniferJenna & Megan. Aren’t they the cutest? Why not play along? =)

Edit: To play along with this mini fashion blogging challenge, pick one dress a month for the next six months to show off on your blog- if you link back to me I’ll know you’ve posted and I will feature you in my monthly posts. You can grab a 6M6D badge from my sidebar =)

I love your dress. It’s full of whimsy! I’m on a mission to find more dresses to wear. I honestly own zero (though I recently bought one, which has already been posted about on my blog!).

You don’t have a Target??? *falls over* I think my life would come to an end without Target :) It’s crazy the big part Target plays in my life – date nights when we’re bored, escape for a couple hours when we’re having a lovers quarrel, break from work over lunch, etc.

Cute dress! I got 2 dresses last week for our Vegas trip. One casual, one fancy. Might have to post them when I get the blog going again.

I know! They’re strictly a US thing, so our nearest is in North Dakota- you would be amazed by how many Canadian license plates you see on the weekends there =)

That dress is very fun and a great style. Its very cold and rainy here today, such a contrast from the weekend when it was warm and sunny so I could work on my tan too.

and what??!! there’s not a target nearby? is that possible anymore – i thought they had taken over :)! i need to make a stop myself to see what summery things they have in, always fun to see what they have!

Reply

26 Kyla Roma May 17, 2010 at 11:20 am

Six Months + Six Dresses is purely an excuse to have a fun, summery series on my blog. I have very few skirts and dresses, and I was looking to expand that this summer so I thought it was a great fit!

To play along you just pick one dress a month for the next six months to show off on your blog- if you link back to me I’ll feature you in my monthly posts, and you can grab a badge from my sidebar. =)

Haha, thanks! It’s all thanks to Ross. Do you guys have Ross in Canada? It’s a store where they sell designer brands for way cheaper. Example: I got a Calvin Klein dress there for $30, which was originally like $90.

I feel like I’m too tall for vintage dresses. Thrifting has never worked out for me :( Do you have any tips? I feel like if I’d lived in the ’50s, I would have been considered a giant!

34 Kyla Roma May 17, 2010 at 11:33 am

I actually have a post that I’ve been waiting to publish for a while about how to thrift shop, I’ll have to schedule it for next month!

While vintage sizes do tend to run smaller, I think that maybe what you’re running into is just that the “average” sized clothes get scooped up faster than the petites. The main trick is to find the places that have a high volume of stock that turns over quickly- and to go on a regular basis (or to even ask the staff what day of the week they restock and go the day after that.

I’m 5’7″ and because of the slimmer pickings for me (and the small number of stores here than in a big city) what I tend to do is buy dresses that are a little too big and then do very basic alterations on them to bring them in a little. If you can practice your sewing skills a little it really opens up your options =)

Reply

35 Lindsay May 17, 2010 at 11:44 am

Thanks! There’s a great thrift store near me, but I get intimidated in there and overwhelmed by all the clothes. Then when I find something I like, it’s too small for me. Buying a size or two larger could make all the difference.

Love the Grecian inspiration along the bustline. the color looks fabulous on you too. i recently discovered ‘new york and co’ in the states and have fallen in love with some of their clothes. you may want to add it to your road trip shopping list.
i just bought this in brown and can’t wait to wear it on the next sunny day:

Thanks for finding me, Stephanie! I found it at a local store in my city called “Paramix”- but their buying is really interesting, they source almost entirely from overseas and only buy a couple of each kind. It’s fun because you can get stuff that no one else will have locally… but not great for this kind of a challenge because no one else can find them! I’m going to try to find something a little less exclusive next time =)
