Six Months + Six Dresses: Number One

So here’s the thing: Sometimes I’m not very good at being a girl.

I’m good at a lot of the parts of it, but looking well pulled together and cute in the way I dress isn’t really something I do on a regular basis. I’m kind of relentlessly awkward. It’s a good kind of awkward – a Hel Looks, vaguely boyish, confident kind of awkward that I’m really comfortable in, but this summer I want to have a more in my closet than skinny jeans, cardigans and t-shirts to draw on every day.

I’ve been trying to start looking a little more fashionable for the past couple of years, diligently sorting through my drawers to get rid of things that just don’t work or that I just don’t wear, and only buying things I really love that will last. And now that my basics & foundation pieces are covered? I want sun dresses. And not just any dresses, I want unique ones that suit me, that I can be comfortable in, that are fun, and that I can love.

What better way to re-vamp my summer wardrobe than by making it a challenge? So I’m resolved to buy (& show you) one new or thrifted dress every month until the fall comes around.

And without further ado, here’s Dress Number One!

oh Kyla this is so super cute! I love dresses. Even though I’m in lab, my wardrobe revolves around them…something I love! Good luck with dresses two-six! :)

  3. I wear dresses so often, I don’t know if it makes sense to participate :( I’ve recently discovered that I HATE wearing pants, so maybe I should try 6 pairs of pants haha

I love this little challenge! I am in desperate need of new summer dresses. I just may have to take myself to the thrift store this weekend and get started… :)

This sounds like a fun challenge! I’m up for it! :D

Summer dresses are one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I think I have four or five and I wear them every day if the temperatures allow it. :)

I can’t wait for the dress you pick for next month!

This dress looks perfect on you! What a fun challenge.

I never wear dresses or skirts, they just aren’t “me.” I’m most comfortable in jeans, a fun colored t-shirt, and a cardigan so thats basically what I wear. All. The. Time.

  8. DeMo says:

So fun! I have many dresses that I haven’t worn yet. I won’t necessarily need to go thrifting to do this, I’ll just look through my closet!
    .-= DeMo´s last blog ..i’m seven and you’re thirteen =-.

  9. You look totally adorable… not awkward at all. I too believe in investing in things that will last, and only the things that we love. And sundresses fit that bill… they never go out of style! I need to commit to this challenge… but first I must engage in seriuos closet cleanup!

I love this idea and I’m definitely joining the challenge! Well, after Baby comes. I think it’s impossible to find a cute maternity dress, and who wants to shop for those anyway? I shall clean my closet tonight in preparation :D

  11. Skinny Dip says:

I love the dress! You look adorable & like you’re actually comfortable!

I’m the opposite: I actually feel more comfortable in dresses a lot of the time. I think this is because I hate trying to match separates. I might just join you in this challenge and take some photos of some of my favorite dresses…if I do, I’ll let you know ;)

  12. Nora says:

You are just too cute for words.

  18. Jen says:

    I LOVE this idea!!

And I love that dress on you! I love that you have a style and you fully embrace it…so many people don’t stick to one style…not that you have to, but your style should showcase your personality (or I think)…

I definitely want to partake in this! I might use it as an opportunity to wear some of my older dresses as well – the ones that have just been sitting in the back of my closet!!

  19. lil says:

I love this idea Kyla, and I love that dress. If your anything like me and enjoy one of a kind clothing I would try F&Q (located in the exchange). It is the sister store to Paramix the owner Candy goes to China and buys only two of everything, and never the same color so your gaurenteed for it to be one of a kind, in this country anyways! It was one of my favorites, they also have amazing bags.

  20. Kristi says:

What a fun idea!!! I just almost bought a new dress yesterday at Old Navy, but I decided I didn’t really need it. But dresses are probably my favorite things to wear, and that one is just simply lovely!!!
Looking forward to seeing your second already!!!
    :)

  21. What an adorable idea. I love that you’re paying more attention to what you’re buying … focusing more on pieces that will last than on quantity. If I hadn’t just bought a slew of dresses for our beach vacation, I’d be joining you on this journey!

  25. Taryn says:

Kyla great idea! Once you start wearing summer dresses you’ll never go back. I rarely wear anything else – you don’t have to worry about a coordinating top or bottom, and if you choose wisely, most dresses feel a little like pajamas, so no waist band cutting into you if you eat a giant (veggie) burger for lunch :-)

  27. Stephany says:

Cute, cute dress! I want to buy more feminine items of clothing, as well. It’s funny you started this project because just last week I was thinking that I wanted to buy a new skirt every time I got paid, because I just love the way skirts feel!

I’m not much of a dress girl. They make me feel awkward and like I’m trying too hard to be feminine? I don’t know why but I just feel weird when I wear dresses. But maybe I’ll try one this summer, who knows?

Well Miss Kyla, it’s official…I now have a blog crush on you. I found you by way of NatalieCottrell and Shine, who rave about you endlessly as I stare at them in clueless wonder. They were right (this is fairly typical) and you are adorable. I’ve spent most of my day on your blog and I love it.

I hope to be like you when I grow up. The sad part of course being that I am 5 years your senior. I love your blog. It feels like a giant hug. Adorable dress, love meeting another vegetarian that makes me realize the point of it (I am not veggie anything, but many of my friends are), and your independence yet sweet traditions are what is very right with this little world.

Great to “meet” you!! Can’t wait to keep on reading.

I think I might need to put that up somewhere in my craft room for gloomy days =)

Two summers ago I used to rock a dress almost every day! And then I stopped. Don’t know why. Probably because I now hate everything in my closet!! I’m in desparate need of a wardrobe overhaul, and this is the perfect place to start!!

  41. Lexi says:

This is such a lovely idea! Funny, because I was just thinking the other day, how few dresses I have, and how I’d like an excuse to buy more! I just might take part, and of course, blog about it!

  45. It’s like you’re reading my mind! I don’t have nearly enough dresses in my closet. I never really re-stocked my collection after my considerable weight loss in 2008. I was actually just jotting down in my planner to go look for sundresses this weekend when I clicked on your post.

Dresses are the easiest things to wear in the summer. I look forward to seeing what else you find!

    Such a cute dress!!!

I love the idea of this challenge :D Like you, I sometimes have trouble being a girl (or at least dressing super fashionably)… I just feel so much more comfortable in my yoga pants than in a dress and heels! But I will make an effort too :) I don’t know that I’ll be able to buy 6 dresses but I’ll try :) Can’t wait to see your next dress!

ok,this idea is brilliant! I love it. I do NOT love dresses b/c I am very self conscious about my legs and all that accompany them after suffering through pregnancies but I’m tired of seeing RIDICULOUSLY cute dresses when I’m out and about and not having the courage to wear them!
So whether it’s with jeans or leggings or even bare legs *gasp* I vow to participate in this, especially since it means I get to buy a new dress or 3 or 4! ;)
