Friday Finds: Hedgehog Friends

by Kyla Roma on April 2, 2010

in Friday Finds, Recurring Posts

1. Hedgehog Friend Print by ABlackApple – $16
2. Hedgehog Magnets by isabellesumbrella– $4.50
3. Letterpress Coaster set by luckybeepress – $12
4. Hugo The Hedgehog stamp by corabelle – $6

I’m not sure if it’s the spring or being raised on Beatrice Potter and The Wind In The Willows but right now it’s all I can do to keep myself from going out and finding a hedgehog to call my own.

If I had a hedgehog, he would be British and his name would be Colin. He would look quite handsome in a sweater vest and he would speak very well about art and life.  I’m sure he would impress my grandparents at Easter dinner, and I would learn to crochet just so he could have a really outstanding collar and leash.

Mister doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but I think he’s jealous he didn’t think of it first.

We had a hedgehog in our garden the other day :D I love them, they’re so cute! We picked him up and took him to a little Hedgehog Hospital down the road to get him all fit and fat for summer – sooo cute curled up in a little ball!!

Okay, just… lets back up a moment!! You found a WILD hedgehog and took him to a HEDGEHOG HOSPITAL that is down the road from you?! Do you love in a children’s book, and can I please come visit you?

/cute blackout =)

Haha, yes!! We always have wild hedgehogs in our garden – we live in the countryside so there’s loads of wildlife. Actually, at the moment there’s a group of squirrels eating some nuts I left out for them :D OMG, I think I do live in a children’s book, don’t I?!

And just for you, here is a picture of Mr Hedgehog ;) http://i44.tinypic.com/bf3rdy.jpg

Igelkottar is the word hedgehog in Swedish…if there is ever a creature that I love the name for as much as the critter, it’s gotta be a hedgehog.

They actually run wild all over Gotland, the island where my family is from—they just toddle along, looking for grubs, looking cute…it’s a good life.

I can’t even fathom wild ones! I’m full of questions, do they live in colonies? Can you find packs of feral hedgehogs running amok? I think this is something I definitely need to see for myself.

Hedgehogs are mostly loaners, from what I understand (unless they’re mating). And yes, you should totally see it for yourself. I nearly had a cuteness freakout (it’s like seeing unicorns in the wild; it’s like it shouldn’t actually be possible!)

SO CUTE Kyla! What is it about strange little creatures like hedgehogs that is so appealing? Colin is definitely the perfect name :).

ack i totally forgot about these cute little creatures. a few years back i actually contacted a hedgie breeder who bred mini hedgehogs to have as pets. i should revisit that whole idea. haha did you know they love to play with old toilet paper tubes and stick their heads in them? i guess it makes them feel comfortable and safe. ha. love it.

Hedgehogs always seem so cute and adorable. I had a friend who had one once as a pet, but he didn’t speak in an accent or wear sweater vests.

Have a wonderful long weekend, Kyla!

Megan and I are planning on getting one as pet one day! And right now we’re fancying the name Hedgebert McPricklesworth. She went to Ikea the other day and brought me home a forest friends cookie cutter set, hedgehog included. Maybe I’ll send you a hedgie cookie care package. ;)

I LOVE hedgehogs!! Unfortunately, they are illegal to have in California (along with every other cool animals) – reason #897433 why I need to move :) I already have a hedgehog stamp so I think next I would go with those cute little magnets!! Adorable!

Wind in the Willows! YES! Loved that book as a kid; should probably reread it now :)

And I’ve always thought hedgehogs were cute as well. Something about them.

Plus, Colin is a wonderful name for a British hedgehog!

Happy Friday, lovely.

My friend used to have a hedgehog named Benson. He would eat all the slugs and snails from the garden, and in the evening she would say to her dog (a huge black lab)”go find Benson!” and the dog would run outside, find the little guy and pick him up in his mouth (Benson would of course curl into his ball) and carefully bring him in for the night. It was adorable! Too bad they are kind of smelly pets… I would TOTALLY have one!

I never thought of myself as a hedgehog person, but darn it if those little guys aren’t CUTE! I’ve never seen one in real life…except maybe at a zoo? But I think we should all start a campaign to get Mister to approve the hedgehog idea, JUST so you can make him an array of crocheted attire.

A friend of mine had a hedgehog as a pet back when we were kids and I LOVED him. They are just the cutest little things. Also, the zoo here in Seattle has closed their nocturnal house, which was one of the most treasured and favorite exhibits for most Seattleites. Hedgehogs lived in that exhibit and I don’t know what has become of them. So sad :-(

When I was a little one in England, I had 2 pet hedgehogs! but one got a fungus on its back and died…so sad. I think they like being free rather than being pets. poor things get frightened and curl up in a ball so easily!

Also, my brother in law is named Colin, and now I’m going to think of hedgehogs whenever he comes up in converstation. Hedgehog is probably nicer than ‘ferret’, which is what we call him behind his back…
