Fridays are for…simple happy

by Kyla Roma on March 5, 2010

in Lists & Facts, Stories About:

Things that are making me happy…

1. Baking - I made these sea salted chocolate chop cookies after seeing Andrea at Kempt Life tweet about them and they are shockingly good. I just bought a little $10 kitchen scale so it was a fun way to try out baking according to weight.

2. Thrifted housewares – This week I got the most beautiful little dish for all my loose buttons ($2.00!), and I’ve been loading a set of oversized mason jars ($1.00 ea!) with flowers every chance I get. Shopping is just more exciting when you introduce a hunt into the equation.

3. Podcasts – We don’t have a dishwasher (see: 101 year old home) so we all our dishes by hand every day, and it’s gone from a bit of a chore to something I love. This summer we bought an ipod dock so doing dishes = dawdling and listen to podcasts. My favourites are This American Life, Radiolab, Stuff You Missed In History Class, & The Moth.

4. My “Not a paper cup” – Mister got me one for Christmas (in the picture above) and using it is just too much fun. It’s my constant at home companion, good design just makes things better.

5. Cheesy Sci-Fi – Escape from New York & Escape from LA have been on TV lately and I cannot tear myself away. I love Snake Plissken! Combine Kurt Russell with an eye patch and an uncertain futuristic dystopia and you can’t go wrong in my books. We could all learn from Snake’s quiet dignity and determination, even when he’s having trouble finding the doomsday device because he’s been kidnapped by plastic surgery addicts. *tears up*

ps – Sponsorship spots for April & May are open! There are only four available so if you have a blog or an etsy store & a couple of dollars, lets talk!
Edit: You guys are amazing! The spots are all sold out, thank you!

I, too, love doing dishes by hand – although I don’t like how dry my hands get afterward. Back in the old country, Ukraine, my mom always did dishes by hand. I don’t think dishwashers were around in the late 80s/early 90s. So when we moved to the States and got a house with a dishwasher, we just used it as storage. So I’ve brought the tradition into my family, although on days when my hands are really dry, I cave and use the dishwasher.

When I first started reading about doing the dishes by hands, I must admit I shuddered at the thought. But, then when you talked about listening to your favorite podcasts? It suddenly seemed like something that could be very calming and something I just might look forward to.

I often do the same thing when I’m doing the dishes. And I just discovered “This American Life” and am really excited to hear some more podcasts. Have you ever checked out “This I Believe”? I love it. And I’m also a fan of CBC’s “Tapestry” (well some of the time, I’m choosy about which one’s I listen to all the way through, but most of the time I dig the content”.)

I understand the no-dishwasher life. My apartment is nearing the 100-year-old mark, and it was a chore at first to hand-wash everything, but now I find it sort of relaxing, and I love having that clean kitchen once all the dishes are put away. My in-laws give us Sci-Fi B movies every year for Christmas, we have quite a collection and they are too much fun to play at movie parties. I love horrible B movies! All time Favorite… Deathrace 2000, they made a remake a couple years ago, but it can’t touch David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone.

c.) I tried baking shortbread last night. Was that interesting. I love baking and discovering new things, but I get so discouraged sometimes. I think being a good baker might come with age. You are too cute! May I ask which brand and color your nail polish is?
By the way, as you may know, in (continental) Europe we only bake (and cook) according to weight. I do have a measuring container that also tells me cups (and I have measuring spoons as well) – which I use for American recipes. But to me, baking & cooking according to weight comes natural. The fact that most people in the US & Canada do not use kitchen scales is so weird to me. I couldn’t do it.

1. I almost always bake by weight. I love it!

2. The fact that you got excited about a button dish probably makes you the cutest thing on Earth.

3. I wouldn’t trade my dishwasher for anything, but I dig the time I spend at the sink doing pots, etc…relaxing.

4. I am thisclose to convincing myself to buy one of those cups.

5. Cheesy sci-fi is way over my head. I like Battlestar Gallactica. Counts?

P.S. I absolutely adore your nail polish.

Those also sound so lovely. :) I saw the exactly same cup while I was working at Target. For a second I thought it was some cup that someone had left on the shelf and I started to pick it up to take it to the trash can only to realize it was made differently. I thought that was pretty cool! It would also be cool to order a custom designed one online somewhere.

Finding cute dishes while thrifting makes me giddy inside, the housewares section is the first stop I make when entering a thrift shop! I tend to have high hopes and end up getting disappointed but there are those few times when I find something great and walk away with a grin on my face :D
Those salted chocolate chip cookies sound SO GOOD. While I enjoy both cooking & baking, I must admit that I prefer cooking b/c I feel like it gives me more freedom to be creative. But my best friend Sarah LOVES to bake so when she has the time I often reap the benefits of her skills :D YUM.
