Dirty Tummy Time

by Kyla Roma on March 17, 2010

in Her Life, Prairie Style, Puppy Madness

This is our second spring with the puppies and since March has warmed up faster than anyone could have imagined, we’re suddenly well into puddles and potholes up here. While the snow banks are receding and little streams are rushing down the back lane, all the sand that has been strewn on the roads is rearing up- which means that any time the puppies go outside there is a mini-bath.

And after a week or so of this? There is a major bath.

I don’t know how I manage to forget about dirty tummy time every spring! Maybe I’m distracted now that I have a garden to plan for the summer…

I’m sorry, but I can’t seem to get over the fact that you have a FREE STANDING TUB. I want one so bad it hurts. Haha!

Do they willingly get in your tub!? Or, do they at least try not to jump out of the tub? Poor Jack is terrified of water for some reason, so I have to treat him like a two year old who cries if he gets water in his eyes: put the water in a huge bucket. Fill a cup of water and calmly pour the water on him. It’s the only way. Who knew a 50 pound black dog could be so sensitive!? =)

Hooray for the garden… definitely want to hear more about that.

They really didn’t like it at first- what I always find crucial is not rushing it and stopping them from whining at all. If they don’t start whining they don’t get worked up about it, and we just take it slow. They get to see the shampoo bottle, then they smell the shampoo, then it goes one, then they see what the shower head looks like with water coming out, then only on their paws… lol

They don’t love it but by taking it really slowly they’ve stopped making it into a HUGE deal. I just keep in mind that dogs aren’t people, they can’t fake it. If they’re making distressed noises? They’re really, honestly, very frightened. Poor kids!

They are so stinkin’ cute!

I have a husky and a miniature dachshund. The dachshund is a piece of cake to bathe – we can do it in a sink! But the husky has to be bathed outside – he is unbelievably hairy, and well, when he shakes, he covers our bathroom in his fur. It’s not pleasant!

My sneak attack is to cover them in the towel and then lift them out of the tub, they shake as soon as I put them down so that seems to be the best damage control for us!

They are so, so, so adorable! This is our first spring, and I’m not enjoying the mess very much. It doesn’t help that Gizmo isn’t too fond of the bathtub and will jump out if you don’t watch closely.

I looks like your puppies take the bath thing better than Sofie does. We don’t even have to say the word “bath”; she can tell by my actions (cleaning the sink, getting out the shampoo, getting her purple towel) that it’s coming. & she runs! She runs as if she won’t get caught. Sometimes she’ll run to Jonathan, hoping to seek refuge behind his legs… but he just turns her in, & she looks so incredibly pitiful.

Which is why I don’t give her baths as often as I should, because wrestling with a 7lb wet, soapy dog in the kitchen sink can be exhausting.

No, I know what you mean- it’s really, really tough!

This worked because the tub is high contrast and the white of it helped bounce the light around- what works for me is a ton of side light to help give them definition (by a window or sliding glass door maybe?), or if you have an external flash, playing with bouncing that off a nearby wall might help. Good luck!
