Moments from the weekend

This weekend was an absolute blur. Friday was my first day of training at work, and so far my verdict is I am high from human contact. The feeling of being around other people was overwhelming from the buzzing feeling after prolonged exposure to conversation I have concluded that being a lady of leisure is not in my genes. I need people. I need a job. I am filing these items in the Good To Know category.

After parting moments with my friend before she left (thank you for your stories!!) I woke up at the crack of 7:30 am to play co-host to our first yard sale in the front yard. Mister’s mom came over with doughnuts and knitting to help hold down the porch with us, and we chatted with neighbours and seasoned garage salers who asked the same questions in the same order before making a courtesy purchase with exact change. I felt quite accomplished for delivering friendliness before 9 AM, even with the help of heaps of caffeine. Mister’s mom and I love each other but exist in different decibel levels. Combined with her Ohioan vs. West Virginian manners she is almost suspiciously bright eyed and bushy tailed early in the morning. But again- I mustered friendly & conscious and was rewarded with doughnuts. Lesson learned.

In the afternoon I went on the second wedding road trip of the last two weeks and shot over nine hours with the most beautiful, classic bride I could imagine. She looked eerily like Nilsa, which just made me like her more than I already would have and made me endlessly amused. I wanted to find a ferris wheel for the background. We ran through fields and ditches, grabbing dress trains, step ladders and tiaras while the couple ran ahead, laughing louder than their whole wedding party. It was beautiful, and a perfect day. After an exceptionally young, anxious and stressed wedding party the week before, this wedding was exactly what I needed. My learning curve from one week to the next has been huge and I’m looking forward to more experience as the fall rolls along.

On Sunday I snacked on refrigerator pickles I made last week, made scones & layered them with home made raspberry jam & devonshire cream. I attempted to make a dent in the out of control herbs in my garden by making my craft room into an herb drying room, and refused to fold the laundry in favour of watching Sense and Sensibility. Because if I’m making scones & jam from scratch I might as well acknowledge that I’m kind of steeped in estrogen.

This week I’m back to work and starting school by distance ed. I have looseleaf, pens, and a study plan all set out that makes it feel like between work, playing with photography, and going back to school I really am starting things fresh every way I look at them. Even if it’s just the feeling that new looseleaf, pens, and study plans invariably bring, I am starting to get a sense of how the fall will feel and I think it’s going to be amazing.

… as long as there’s no frost until October.

How was your weekend? Do you have any plans you’re looking forward to over the next month?

Oh my goodness, Kyla – did you take that picture at the top?? Amazing.

Also – I am a little jealous of your jam-making/herb-drying skills. I thought I was a Suzy Homemaker until I started reading your blog. ;)

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend Kyla! The wedding pictures will be fantasatic. I am so glad that training on Friday went well. So your MIL is from Ohio/WV area? Those are my stomping grounds. We must chat about this. Best of luck as you continue settling in at your new job and start your courses.

My classes began on Saturday, so I’ve done a few things already. I also have a paper to write. (I have two weeks to write it, though, so I’ll be fine.)

Good luck with work and school! New pens/pencils are always refreshing to me.

Your weekend looked fabulous! You take such great pictures! And it’s totally cool to be ’steeped in estrogen’ sometimes. We’re women, hear us roar. and bake scones. ;)

love the pictures. and love the herbs! and love back to school supplies…. how do you make refridgerated pickles?

Erin – This is the recipe I used, only I used bottled water so the chlorine in tap water wouldn’t prevent the pickling from happening & used more vinegar than they recommend because I like things really tart. They are wonderful & easy if you can find pickling cucumbers at your grocery store.!

It’s official. I will have both EP and you as my photographers at my wedding =) And I might just have it by you so we can have an awesome photo in the prairies. I MEAN IT!

Glad you have a study plan, I find it helps so much to have one. I know you’ll be great.

As for the weekend? I did a whole lot of media consumption: movies, books & time with Irish thanks to the stupid sickness that came upon me last week.

Good luck with work this week! Also, I’m working on the skype/video cam thing =)

When the bride and groom can loosen up and have a good time, it’s contagious … everyone from the family to the wedding party to the photographers catch the disease. Guess that it’s an important lesson to learn should you make this photography thing a more permanent thing in your life … connecting with your subjects is very important!

Sounds like a lovely weekend. I’ve never held a yard sale – but I’ve been to one before. Fun! But why do they start so early? ;)

I am going to a work-related workshop halfway across the country in two weeks, and then from there, I’ll go back to Europe (Germany) for 10 days! I am thrilled!

I think someday you should post your jam recipe :) Also, your pictures are so lovely. Looks like a beautiful wedding.

This weekend…

I missed you. I stayed out until 5 am. I found my inner unconditional love for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Buddy Holly, Elvis ‘The King’, Roy Orbison and old movies. T’was joyous! But I’ve missed you. What are you doing this week?
Throughout the next month I’d like to actually have the yard sale I’ve wanted, make sure my rat doesn’t make any holes in my shirts, and make my house my own. Even if it doesn’t involve painting, dammit!
