This weekend was excellent for coffee, tea, and comfort. After weeks of incredibly cold “summer” weather we upgraded to cold and rainy- and I finally surrendered.
If summer wasn’t coming to me, I was going to have a day of Fall comfort.
I waded through the tide of yappy black dogs that live on our main floor, put bananas and chocolate sauce on my waffles, kissed my Mister, made coffee (and thermos after thermos of tea) and went straight back upstairs. I piled all the pillows in the house into the bed, fluffed the blankets and cuddled right back into bed to watch Audrey Hepburn movies all morning.
And then I had a bubble bath.
And then I made cookies, and I may or may not have had a glass of white wine.
And I’m not going to lie- beyond the weather, the sheer volume of change that’s happening right now is finally starting to sink in, and this weekend it laid me out.
It’s been a month since I quit my nightmarish job, and I’m really not working now! My looking around for part time work is going alright, but without a firm YES! or NO! from people it’s hard to feel secure. I’m hoping that by the end of August I’m locked in at a new job.
On a day to day basis, Mister and I are leaning into DIY projects around the house in the kitchen and mudroom that have me totally fired up, I’m reading and am trying new recipes (I made home made pizza this weekend!!!) all the time, and it all feels like my life is on the verge of changing directions again.
There’s a lot of hope and a lot of nerves. A lot of waiting, and a little white wine.
For the first time since moving into our first home, getting married, and starting in on this new phase of life I can say with total certainty that I don’t know how life will look in a year, and I don’t know how I want it to look. So I’m going to try to let it develop as it will- because no matter how many decisions I make or how I plan it seems that it’s up to chance, hope, and timing to determine how this all plays out. And I’m excited to see what opportunities they help me pounce on.
Times are definitely changing as of the end of this summer, but I know that it’s for the best and that when I have my doubts there’s always Audrey Hepburn. No matter how my life changes, she is delightfully charming and constant, just how breakfast in bed on a rainy day should be.

I am so excited that you are going to be starting school in September! None of us knows for sure what life will look like in a year, its one of the beautiful unknowns of life. Somedays staying under the covers, watching movies, baking cookies, and drinking wine is a must. Sounds like you had a lovely weekend. (Can you please send me the recipe for the pizza dough?)

Oh Kyla, I’m SO glad that you’re finding your right path. In spanish there’s a saying that says something like “man proposes, God disposes”. Either one believes in God or not, this points out the fact that life changes, and things don’t always go according to plan. For better or for worse, but there’s a reason.

Wow I’m glad with the waiting you’re still so productive with the shoots and fully booked. I need the similar productive attitude :) I’m sure you can get where you want with your dedication and the school, I will try to let things develop in my situations as well.

It all sounds so cool – going to school, photography – and your tea and cookie and wine and movie morning sounds perfect. I’m really excited for you – I know personally that there’s nothing like motivating yourself and creative and studious activities to make you really appreciate how meaningful life can be.

I did almost the same thing this weekend. Except I blew up an air matress and laid out on that in the living room. It felt so good. I wish I had all of the Audrey Hepburn movies.

My favourite uncle, who died a couple of years ago, used to make pizza from scratch. We’d have 2-family (10 people, including my favourite cousins) pizza-making parties. It was awesome. (I don’t have the recipe now, but my sister made Bon Apétit’s version and said making it with your hands was key.)

I’m what you might call a planner. Since I was a kid, I wanted to (try to) plan the future … six or seven years ago I would have freaked not knowing what the next year would look like. But then I met Brian, who is the complete opposite, and he’s taught me to appreciate the beauty of not knowing. Because, well, you just never know what might happen! And I can only see good things happening for someone such as yourself.
I have never once seen an Audrey Hepburn movie. I should change that, and I should take a day off from work and have a day just like yours. It sounds relaxing and fabulous.
When the stress of change gets to you, having a day like that is probably better than anything a doctor can prescribe. And school? Sounds like a great plan to have, and with any luck, you’ll have a job to go along with it.

audrey hepburn…so ridiculous gorgeous, simple and elegant.
have fun at school my dear. i did the HR thing for my undergrad. i really liked it. while I found out i wasn’t really cut out for the business world, it was still very enjoyable while it lasted. i worked in benefits. not very exciting, but i got to speak to a lot of people on a daily basis. i used to work for the Kellogg Company Corporate benefits, meaning we serviced 25,000 employees and retirees! WHEW!
