Mr: So I was thinking, we should go on a road trip this weekend…

K: That sounds amazing! I would love to- so… Fargo?

Mr: How about taking a picnic to the abandoned dam in Pinawa?

K: Oh fantastic! Will we just grab some food at a stand up there?

Mr: Well, I was thinking we’d take a picnic.

K: Yea, so we would grab the food at a stand, and then take it to where we were going!

Mr: No, I was meaning a picnic, actually.

K: Like, we wouldn’t buy any food there?

Mr: Kyla, I love you. I have one word that expresses what I’m suggesting. The word is PICNIC!

Our picnic was up and down amazing, once I wrapped my mind around what Mister was suggesting. I haven’t packed a cooler with snacks and trucked out of town since I was 6 years old- there was something so simple and familiar about the whole process. It rained the whole time we were at the dam so I ran around without a hat, corralling Schipperke puppies as they skittered across the wide flat rocks of the Canadian shield. We walked over rusted out generators and through the huge structure, now with holes and evergreens punched through its facade, and stood where it’s township had been. We dried off the puppies in the back of the car, ate sandwiches while the car windows fogged, and laughed pretty much the whole time.

On the way home I watched the highway rise and fall away from the horizon while tall black velvet ears bobbed in and out of my view. Mister and I talked about the coming months over the low hum of talk radio on the fourth of July.

I love the moments when the world feels so utterly uncomplicated.

When was the last time you took a picnic?

Well I had a picnic planned last year but then the rain got in the way, the ground was too soggy and it totally ruined it. So… um… I’d say it’s been at least three or four years! however, this post makes me most definitely want to plan one or spontaneously plan one!

Glad you had a lovely time =)

(did you change your hair color? whatever you did or didn’t do, it looks great!)

Wow, I can’t remember the last time I went to a picnic. Okay, that’s not true. A few years ago, we packed a picnic basket full of fruit & cheeses & went to the beach. But if I remember correctly, we didn’t have that great of a time because we got into a silly fight while we were there… We’re definitely going to have to redo that one. ;]

I’m on a serious picnic kick. Of course, there was the Canada Day picnic at the legislature with Andrea and co., and B and I took a picnic lunch to Lake Louise on the weekend too. Picnics just make food taste better. :)

My friends and I take picnics all the time. A loaf of bread, some lunchmeat, cheese, and water (maybe an occasional beer) thrown in the cooler. The we stop where ever we fancy and just hang out. I love the feeling of uncomplicatedness. Its what I am striving for this summer. =)

The last time I went on a picnic my husband proposed. He took me
to the same spot where my grandfather proposed to my grandmother.
Best picnic ever.

Sounds like a lovely day, even if the weather wasn’t fantastic! I actually picnic in central park every weekend (as long as its nice out). Its the highlight of summers in NYC!

I’m not much of a “pack a picnic basket” kind of lady but I’m a huge fan of eating fancy cheese and fruit in the park. Does that count?

The last REAL picnic I went on is such a great memory. It was with a guy I dated very briefly in college, who is now one of my BEST friends (Sean – he just joined 20sb!). Anyway, he grabbed me from class one day, drove me down to the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Main by the Stone Arch bridge and had a picnic all packed and ready to go.

I was SUPER impressed, and it was so very sweet.

I’ve always wanted to do a wine and cheese and bread and fruit picnic ever since, but haven’t yet… perhaps while you’re in Minne we picnic at one of the lakes? :)

PS – keep an eye on your mailbox in the next week or so missy :)

Suddenly I’m pretty insistent that you and I, and whomever else we can scrounge up, do a picnic in As. Park or something.
Yeah…let’s do that…
xo

I haven’t been on a picnic in the longest time! Sounds like it was a blast :)

Picnics are lovely. The last one Husband and I went on wasn’t too long ago. We went to a place close to where we live. There are boulders and a creek. We sat under one of Husband’s favorite boulders and ate sandwiches (while sitting on his crashpad–what he lands on if he falls while bouldering). It was nice.

Hopefully you two will be able to do something like this again soon.

Miss Dallas

Picnics are tremendous fun! I wish it wasn’t so hot here, otherwise it would be great weather for slurping up delicious food on a comfy blanket.

I don’t think I’ve ever been on a picnic before. I’m entirely serious. How sad, right? Maybe I can convince the boyfriend to change that…

Your dogs are so beautiful! (By the way.)

My friends and I had a picnic in Central Park a month or so ago. It was wonderful; something we should all do a little more often. Your picnic day with Mister sounds great!

Not in a super long time. Sounds like you two had an amazing time!

Now, I am dying to go on a picnic. Ted and I went on one in college, and it was lovely. I must do it again immediately!

Oh, that sounds really fabulous! I love the idea of packing up snacks, and creating a small little lunch to take with you. Much better than getting some take out at your destination! :)

i was just telling matt how i want to go on a picnic! i honestly cannot remember the last time i went on one. i’m so excited for this weekend when we sort of go on one, haha.

so cute (puppies! and also your hair!) and sounds so nice.

i’ve been checking in for a while now and just wanted to say hello and thanks for posting the beautiful photos and sharing your life.

picnic sounds like a nice idea…

That’s awesome! I haven’t been on a picnic in ages.

Your puppies are adorable! What kind of dogs are they?

Stupid things first: I really like the picture of the sandwiches.

But I don’t think I’ve done picnics much for awhile, unless you count camping trips…

The last time I went picnic would definitely be long time ago. Too long actually. All the going outs are usually to places and we never really take time to pack or anything. Too bad :( I would love a picnic one weekend.

I’ve never had a real picnic. Hence why it’s on my life list!!

I think never! That is the saddest thing in the world. Must change that this summer. Thanks for the wallet-friendly tip!

Honestly, NEVER.

There are no places in this country to make a picnic in, so… NEVER.

I can’t wait until I’m in France and I do them (on my own or with people) every Sunday. I already decided it’s going to be my ritual.

your glasses and gods are cute :)
and picnics are lovely and adorable
i’m glad you both had a lovely time
it was very sweet and you deserved it *hug*
the last time I took a picnic
was whilst on vacation
I hope to have some more very soon
and on my next vacation next month <3
xoxo

how absolutely wonderful!! picnics are so much fun! and that picture of the sandwiches is so amazingly yummy looking! you are way cute with your dogs!
my friend and I are going to go wine tasting this summer and bring a picnic with us, im really looking forward to it!

Sounds lovely! I can’t get over how much our black pom looks like a schipperke!

I want to have a picnic now!

I’m with Elle – there is something about picnicing that makes food just taste.. better. Now, it could be that sun warmed triple creme brie with strawberries and french bread IS just better, no matter where you eat it.. But I like to think it was the sunshine. *smile*

My last picnic hasn’t really been that long ago… maybe two years (Ok, I know… it’s been a while). It was so much fun! We should do that MUCH MORE OFTEN! :)

I love picnics! We have an outdoor music venue here in the city where Sweets and I have been known to bring a picnic, meet up with friends and listen to live music. In fact, we’re planning one this weekend. Can’t wait!

sounds like one of the best times! i wish C would think of things like that. i’m the one that plans stuff, so maybe we’ll do that soon! i haven’t been on a picnic in um…i don’t even know! you’re pups are adorable :)

My boyfriend and I actually do this semi often. At my last job, I received a great picnic basket that is insulated, a fold up picnic blanket, and a picnic thermos for wine with a wine opener! It makes picnics fun and a breeze. Sometimes we’ll go over to West Seattle – where there’s a beach and a boardwalk, and sit in the sand and watch the sunset from the other side of the lake. It’s so simple and romantic!

Aww the picnic sounds so nice! So sweet. I love that picture of you and the puppies too, so cute!

That looks like it was such fun! The last time I packed a cooler and some food was to make the drive to Vegas… and I think you know how that one went. PS love your dogs!!!

Sounds like a lovely day! (Also, your puppies are adorable!)

What a fun day! I don’t think I could ever bring my pups to a picnic–they’re too naughty!

i haven’t taken a true picnic in years. actually i think it was in HS. maybe that wasn’t TOOO long ago i hope. my friend and i had one at some local park.. she brought the oldfashioned picnic basket and everything. it was lots of fun! but picnics strike me as romantic, and wish i could have one with a beau. :)

How fun! It has been entirely too long since I took a picnic with me anywhere, and the next date night, I think, should be a picnic night. Complete with Lucy Belle and some kind of sparkling wine.

That sounds fantastic! I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

The last picnic I can *remember* having was my ‘engagement picnic’ – memorable for sure! It’s hard to top a picnic where you come away a bride-to-be.
That was almost 2 years ago…I think I’m due for another picnic soon! Maybe an engagement anniversary picnic…hmmm…

psst: i just added you to my favorite friends list. well specifically my Friendly Blog Obsessions list. I dig your blog girly!

This is incredibly sweet! I was just thinking about how I really want to do something like this with Jay. There’s something about packing up a cooler with a bunch of goodies – you’re right. And sandwiches always become a bit more exciting when they’re eaten somewhere new. Heehee.

I think the last time I’ve done something like that was last summer, with my best friend. We packed up leftover coconut shrip, corn on the cob, nectarines, chips and bottles of water for a day at the beach. Needless to say, it was the greatest beachside picnic of all time.

And I agree with you when you said, “I love the moments when the world feels so utterly uncomplicated.” Seriously, those are the moments that get me through every day.

it’s been a couple of years since my last picnic, but i just bought a blanket for the occasion so hopefully i’ll be having one soon! would you like to trade links? i love your blog!
