Close calls and narrow misses

in Puppy Madness

It’s been a busy week – I had a number of crushing deadlines to attend to,  home renovations to plan, and whims to pursue, which would have been fine, had there not been a major puppy scare.

ash

I went to take Ash on his late night walk, and found that he was looking…strange. His nose was wrenched to the side, he was salivating a lot, his bottom jaw was crooked and slack – about an inch out of where it would usually sit and was making a terrible grinding noise while he gnashed his jaws.

I have never seen an animal’s face look like his did, it was horrible. I panicked, shouted for Mister, we scrambled for the phone trying to call our vet, the emergency clinic, my mom – anyone – while he whined and looked broken. We got in touch with the emergency clinic and he was in my arms,  ready to sit down in the car when some thing popped and he was alright again.

The consensus seems to be that he somehow completely dislocated his lower jaw and then popped it back into place. Which is also nothing I’ve even heard of an animal doing. He seems fine, but we’re being very gentle with him and making sure we get rid of some of the larger toys we have for them. I think we’re far more shaken up than he is.

- – -

But on to the whims! I received $500 back on my taxes and immediately started a plan to spend all of it on camera equipment and bathing suits – last night I executed my plan without a hitch!

The Haul

  • 1 Tripod for my DSLR
  • 1 remote for DSLR
  • 1 external flash for my DSLR
  • 1 new found lens for my DLSR. Found, because I got all hyped to buy this amazing lens that Rachel and Wishcake were talking about, and after buying it found that it was already in my camera bag. I bought my Rebel off a guy from a classifieds site, and he had that very lens stuffed in the bottom of the extra bag he threw in. And because I pay attention to my belongings, I had no idea!
  • 1 navy/white striped bathing suit that may just work for me
  • 1 pair of black gladiator sandals

I felt nauseous after spending that amount of money in one go, but it means that the house is now full of new toys and I have everything I need for Vegas now: a plane ticket, sandals, and a bathing suit.

I didn’t have much time to play with the new camera set up because we were out so late (and I was running around in my new gladiators), but I managed to take one picture that I’ve swapped out for my profile pictures, and there will be more soon.

The sum up: I love my new flash. It’s a beautiful thing.

What are some whims you’ve indulged recently?

You look so CLASSIC in that photo, absolutely beautiful!

And sorry about your doggie! When you were describing his face, at first I thought it sounded like he was having a seizure. I have a dog who gets seizures and that’s what his face does.

Love the new picture and yay for finding a lens you didnt know you had. I am always incredibly excited for things like that.

Your dogs jaw dislocating would have scared me to death. My golden can open her mouth extraordinarily wide, sort of like a snake that almost looks like she disconnects her jaw. I hope that doesnt happen to her. i hope Ash is ok now and doesn’t feel the need to scare you again. =)

My whims will be indulged next week when I go to Columbus to visit with the bestest — lots of shopping planned. =)

you FOUND the lens in the bag?! holy lucky! I can’t wait to chase my puppies around for pictures now. :)

and jaw dislocation? every time I think about this, it seriously scares me to death. he seems to be doing well though? i can imagine you’d be freaked.

Ack! Glad to hear your pup is ok! That just sounds so painful.

Yay for new things! I recently purchased a swim suit. But I’ll have to wait for the sun to come out and warmer weather.

I’m glad to hear Ash is okay. You should post a picture of the new sandals :)

As far as indulgences- patio furniture, art work and gelato.

Ohhh – I need a tripod, remote and external flash for my DSLR. I have two lenses that I love, but more goodies are always fun. Let me know what kind you got and how much you love them!

I suppose my biggest indulgence was actually a necessity. My car died a bit ago. I mean, drop dead transmission gone died. It would have cost more to fix it than it’s worth (it was a ’97), so I had to get a new car. ALthough the price hurt, I am happy to be driving in something that doesn’t shudder when I go over 50 MPH.

I’m so boring! I went to a show last night and I bought new sock-gauge knitting needles. I do, however, have a lot of great Canon toys. I love (!) my 40D.

We have the same camera! Or, well, I have a Rebel too. Mine is a few years old though. (6 megapixel EOS)

Poor puppy! Give Ash a gentle hug for me.

Oh, and my whim would be my iPhone, although that was necessitated by my crappy old phone being on its last legs.

Whim #1: my Blackberry Curve. It’s a little slice of heaven when used properly

Whim #2: shopping with a friend last Saturday; a black dress for Vegas (not super fancy, but great for when we are walking around/sight-seeing), two new tops, three pairs of flip-flops and one pair of shorts

Whim #3 that I’ll be investigating this weekend: the Mystic Tan. It’s the spray tan. I need a bit of color to go with my newly dyed black hair otherwise I look rather goth which isn’t the look I’m going for!

Awww, your poor doggie! I hope he’s alright. I would be freaking out if that happened to Sofie. :[

Oh man, poor Ash! Typical puppy move: hurt yourself, fix yourself and scare your owners to death. Oh, the things we go through with our furry friends!

I haven’t indulged in anything recently… I’ve been oh so good to my wallet, which is boring but good. I did, however, have a Greek salad and MASSIVE slice of banana cream pie at lunchtime. Mmmm, feta and sugar… my arteries are going to hate me!

Please share which flash + tripod you bought. Pretty please! I’m on the hunt and would love a recommendation!

Ooooh external flash! Drool. I want one. And a tripod.

Remote was one of the most fun things I ever bought. They’re relatively inexpensive and so much fun to play with.

Oh my goodness! I’m so glad Ash is okay. Chester is the first dog I’ve owned, just me, not the family pet. He is my little guy, like a child but not really since he is an animal and all—but I love him to pieces. Makes me wonder how in the world he popped his jaw out of place….so strange! Keep us posted!!

As for your camera….I’m so jealous. Although the one I have is great and fine, I wish I had one that was a little better.

Aside from my car, I recently bought a new bathing suit. It was a little more expensive than what I wanted to spend, but I like it.

Aww, poor thing! I’m so happy that he is OK now. I would have been completely freaked out if Lucy was doing the same thing.

I’m about to majorly splurge on a new camera body, and I cannot wait until the paycheck that allows me to do it! I’m hoping to have the camera for Vegas!

The poor pooch! Wow, I’m so glad to hear that it appears Ash is better :(

Also, you girlies are making me very jealous about your cameras, but I don’t think I’d know what to do with a fancy one!

As for Vegas – I bought swimsuits this week, but still need sandals and a dress…

What lens are you talking about? I’m looking to buy a new lens for my Rebel but don’t know which one I want more.

Oh my! Honestly, I would’ve freaked out.

It’s Saturday now and Ash is still alright, thank goodness! A lot of you said you would have freaked out had that happened….I definitely lost it pretty much completely.

The Camera Equipment
My tripod and flash were house brand at the store I was at – the flash was about $140 (instead of $600!! No thanks Canon…) and the tripod was a mere $45. Definitely not top of the line but it has much steadier hands than I do!

My camera is a Canon Rebel XTI that I bought from a classifieds listing for about half price – cause that’s just how I roll.

Thanks for reading!

Congrats on a new swim suit! I always think it’s a huge success to find a suit that you feel comfortable in. (Maybe that speaks to me and my negative opinion of my body? Haha, whoops!)

Glad Ash is okay. Yikes!

How scary for you! I’m glad Ash is ok. I panic about the tiniest things happening to my pups.

I really need to get this lens that all you ladies have. Maybe this summer when I have some extra cash!

Nice loot, and how exciting about the lens being in the bag!

We’re trying to cut back on whimsy spending, but stuff still sneaks in there every now and then. I am trying to decide if more plane tickets (other than Vegas!) are in order for the summer. I’m leaning toward yes…!
