New job!

by Kyla Roma on February 10, 2009

in Her Life

It’s hard to be excited about a new opportunity until you tell the people who don’t want you to go that you’re leaving. Interviewing is exciting, like meeting someone new and all of the sudden you’re dating, talking, finding out everything about them. But of course it’s also like cheating and immediately after the excitement of a job offer comes the worst part of all: the break up.

I gave notice to my employer on Thursday morning before going home to try to recover from bronchitis over the weekend. It was better because I didn’t have to deal with the aftermath, and at the same time it was worse because even if I was really, really sick I still felt like I was running away. This week is going to be a series of awkward conversations because they want to retain me and aren’t listening when I say that I’m already contracted to someone else. The part of me that has worked in HR knows they’ll have to change tack quickly if they want to hire within two weeks, so hopefully I can be clear in one conversation and we’ll be done.

Over the weekend the feelings of guilt & cautiousness have mostly passed and the excitement is starting to kick in. I’m slowly realizing that I’m going to have a whole new work life soon! In an amazing dream industry!! And I have even been approved for a tiny little New Work Clothes shopping spree!

Thank you for all of the advice over the past couple of weeks, blogging my job change has been downright terrifying and at best dumb and at worst stupid. While it was definitely calculated carelessness, writing about it has been a lot of fun. Having so much input into something that’s extremely relevant to what I’m going through has been fantastic, and I need to thank Elle Bee, Nilsa, and Ben for their e-mail counseling sessions.

So do you want to know about the job??

The General Idea

  • I’m starting on March 2nd
  • I will be a “Marketing & PR Assistant”
  • I’m working in the music industry(!!!(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)!!!)
  • I’m beside myself about the whole thing.

The Particulars Of The Awesomeness

  • I’m going to be managing media buying, involved in artist branding, and will be the primary local Marketing/PR contact shortly after I’m hired.
  • I’m easily cutting 25 minutes out of my relatively short commute every day by suddenly being one five minute bus ride from home. This makes taking care of the puppies at lunch a hundred times easier & makes biking to work a real possibility.
  • I will working in one of the most impossibly cool neighbourhoods in the city. This means I’m within walking distance of restaurants, pubs, and antique stores. Not to mention free wi-fi and plenty of coffee shops which will lead to more ability to comment on blogs! And to write! During the day!
  • I am finally on Mister’s To And From Work route so we’ll cut down on morning commute and reduce the amount of harassment he gets from his supervisor when I make him late.

And I have finally achieved one of the Holy Grail’s of the job transition: I have a full week off between my current job ending & my next job starting.

This is a really hard time in the job market wherever you are, and I’m not only proud that I found this nichey little opportunity that seems to so fit my life, but I’m lucky as anything too. When I got out of university with a Politics degree I had no idea where it would take me, and somehow within two years I’ve worked in TV/Commercial Productions/Movie Visual Effects, Theatre and now the Music industry all while living in the middle of the prairies. It’s a little overwhelming and really, really exciting.

I think my new job will have some really incredible challenges, among them a steep learning curve but I’m ready for the whole experience. Last year was a year of stability. I really want this year to be one of opportunity. Here’s hoping!

Hearing about awesome jobs like yours makes me want to move to your part of the prairies. But then I recall seeing news footage of someone skating on the street this morning and I’m all, no. Not so much for me. For you? Fantastic.

Ohhh! So exciting Kyla!
And, you give me hope that my English degree and MBA in Marketing will allow me to find something cool to do.
I’m dreaming of working in the entertainment industry….but alas, Southern Virginia is not hopping with television studios. It’s either the Christian broadcasting station or QVC. Sigh.

i hate how guilty i feel when i leave a job.. it always helps when someone reminds me that they’re a corporation and wouldn’t hesitate to do what is best for THEM, and if that had included firing me, they would have done it mostly without remorse. so doing something that is right for me – and doing it properly, with 2 weeks notice – is certainly not something they’ll hold against me.

but enough of that. on to YAY! SQUEE! CONGRATULATIONS!! :-)

Honestly, in a sea of lay-offs and professional disappointments that surrounds most of us, you are an island of hope. You have shown that even in little prairie towns, there are jobs. You just have to patiently wait for the right match. Don’t let the world around you get you down. YOU deserve this, girl, and I couldn’t be more happy for you!

Yay you! This sounds like a fantastic job! And don’t feel guilty AT ALL for leaving your current job. If you are unhappy where you are and what you are doing, you have every right in the world to look elsewhere and find something new. I’m so glad you did too. :)

The job sounds wonderful, Kyla! Strange to think that you will have an extra 25 minutes in your life every day, huh. I bet Mal and Ash are going to be on cloud 9 with Mom around for lunch every day!

Kyla,

I am so excited for you. This sounds like a wonderful job and an excellent opportunity and I think you truly deserve it! I know what you mean about experiencing guilt for leaving one job to go to another. I went through that last year but you can’t fault yourself for going after your dream job! Do you and Mister commute to work together? That sounds like a really nice way to start/end your work day! Again, congratulations and best of luck! It is during times like these when I wish bloggy friends were real life friends so I could buy you a drink to celebrate!

I think you already know this but I too am in the PR biz. It’s not exactly the same as working in a music marketing/PR situation, but feel free to ask me anything that might confuse you during your adjustment period. I’ve been at it for three years and still sometimes feel like I have no clue what is going on, but it’s a learning process.

I’m so happy for you! And how perfect is a five minute commute –on your hubby’s work commute route no less? High five for work life balance!
