The best thing about the late fall/early winter has been finishing all the house projects that we started this year. From July to November we ran a moving into our house, getting married, repainting the house, getting new windows, new patio doors, and new eavestrough gauntlet. And then there was the little war with the neighbors part one and part two. The last piece of the puzzle has been the back yard.
Mostly because this is what the back yard looked like:

Which is to say that it looked like a shanty town-come-meth lab.
When we painted the house, the neighbors shouted and threatened to sue us. When we got new evestroughs they claimed to be taking pictures of our house when we weren’t there. And when we started work on the fence, they installed a web cam in their front and back windows so they would have records of when our workers were on their property. All the while our yard has had shared access, and all the while they’ve mentioned that our dogs are going to be “a problem”, which means that shared access to our yard is not at all acceptable.
Building the fence was nothing short of terrifying. We started the demolition ourselves, only to have them start circling the garage taking pictures right after we’d started while pretending not to see us there. After about 10 mins. of this I decided it was appropriate to play the “screw this” card and just pay someone to deal with their aggression.
When the demolition crew came on site the neighbours charged out of their house screaming and swearing, they claimed to have a special agreement with the gas company that would prevent us from building. They stood in the shared part of our yard, and yelled at the crew – daring them to build. Daring them to move this curmudgeon of a man.
They railed and called the gas company and threatened to call the police. They claimed the tin shed was covered in lead paint, and we were going to contaminate their yard. For the most part, we stayed on the phone with lawyers who were family friends and stayed indoors for the week that the fence was being put up. But because they’d threatened our puppies, this wasn’t an optional building project. We needed to make sure they were out.
And internet, it was so worth the fuss!!

The new yard!
We have literally doubled the size of the back yard. The puppies have a dog run for the summer, and I have a whole yard that I can fill with whatever veggies and herbs and flowers that I can think of in the spring!
The new back yard means that we have completed all the major projects I had planned for the house in the first year during our first four months here. It has been such a whirlwind. In the new year the house turns 100 years old and the projects move inside.
I’m planning on:
- Refinishing our hardwood floors
- Repainting the kitchen cupboards
- Restyling the kitchen into a white and green mod space
- Stripping the white paint (!) off the beautiful oak staircase
- Making my craft room thoroughly whimsical
And then there’s the DIY decorating to think of…
Winter can do its worst with -50 C and all the rest. I have sweaters and summer schemes to keep me busy.
And in what I take to be a sign of the Christmas spirit, when the neighbours put up their Christmas decorations they took down the web cam. Maybe there’s hope for us after all.

I bow down to you. My renovations peaked at painting and that still isn’t finished/done well.
Your yard looks amazing!! It must be so much fun to have so many projects, I’d love to fix up an old house. I’m sure you never have time to be bored.
That looks awesome!
You’ve gone through a LOT, my dear. You are so strong!
(Especially to endure those winters. Crazy!)
Very nice improvement. You should be featured on HGTV!
Really, I don’t know how you managed to go through all that. I would have just sent a poisoned pie to them.
Good luck with the renovations to come!
that yard looks great. all that trouble will make you all the more glad to have a physical barrier between the yards-a xmas gift for the puppies.
The backyard looks gorgeous. Definitely a backyard I would be proud of and the dogs must love the dog run!
dude! your neighbors are LAME. what on earth was their issue?! ugh!
but I do looove what you did to the yard.
LOVE.
It’s lovely!
And um, your neighbors are crazy.
Kyla it looks fantastic! The puppies will love that big yard!
WOO HOO! I’m so excited for your yard – and VERY envious! Maybe a christmas card in their mailbox would help smooth the neighbors over? A “no hard feelings” gesture – even if there are, ha. The puppies must be getting pretty big these days! Hope you’re settling into the cold alright – spring’s just around the corner! (okay, not really, but i’m hopeful.)
Your new yard looks amazing! Yes–a little shanty-town-esque before, but what a transformation! I can’t wait to own a home!
Good fences make good neighbors… and keep the crazies out! The yard looks AMAZING. Congrats!
the yard looks great! your neighbours are ridiculous. if the puppies are a problem, why wouldn’t they want you to build a fence? sheesh.
I love it! I don’t really have neighbors anymore, for now, but I can totally empathize. I’m glad peace seems to be easing in. Enjoy your privacy!
That does look great. And I’m dumbfounded as to how much effort your neighbors put into being complete dicks.
Lousy neighbors are. the. worst.
Glad to see you didn’t let it stop you! The backyard looks fantastic!
How in the name of God do you put up with those awful people? Goodness! It just sucks the life out of me reading about it. You and your hubs are so gracious for not slapping those neighbors from hell in the face like they deserve.
The yard looks great, and I’m so excited for you. How lovely to be able to have your very own garden!
As for your next DIY projects, I’m sure they will all turn out gorgeous. Can’t wait to see them!
You’re an inspiration! We moved into our house in April and haven’t even managed to unpack all our boxes yet. :)
Can I help you decorate?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–your neighbors sound insane! But the backyard looks totally fabulous!!! Nice job! Have fun w/the indoor projects!
The yard looks beautiful! Way to stick it out with the rotten neighbors! If you’ve been through my archives (Tag: The Children Next Door) you’ll know that we’ve had our share of A-holes on the other side of the fence. I hope that this is the end of your troubles.
Not that you need to hear it from me, but any neighbor that complains about that LOVELY fence is out of their minds. So glad you guys can relax a bit now in your nice, big backyard!
Oh, it looks great! I’m glad all of the hassle was worth it. A backyard like this for our dogs is my dream. Congrats. :)
Love, love, love your yard!
Glad the neighbors are cooling their jets for the time being. Nothing like the Christmas spirit to bring everyone together, no matter how odd a way it is.
Enjoy the backyard!
I looks great! And I bet the dogs are happy. Do they play outside often? What do they think of the cold and the snow?
I’ve convinced myself that my parents are getting me a bulldog for Christmas. I’m afraid I’m going to be disappointed. AGGH!
Oh my gosh the yard looks great! You guys did a great job.
I’m exhausted just from reading this!
You inspire me to want to keep fixing up this place! Well done for solving your neighbor problem in one fail swoop! Brilliant.
Now you, your husband and the puppies can live in peace!
Love your new fence! I gots to get me one of those for my house!
The back yard is AMAZING. Glad the neighbours took down the webcams. Yowza.
The yard looks great! Your neighbors sound horrific though. Good for you for foraging ahead with your plans despite their threats. White paint on an oak staircase! Oh no!!
Wow – I thought our neighbours were bad. I mean, they are bad but not that kind of crazy. Your yard looks fantastic!
