Thanks for all of the well wishes last week about my mom’s hobbled cat Oliver and my puppies being neutered. They’re all doing very well, but it was a sad night without the boys. So much of everything now is geared around the puppies that having them gone was startling.
I didn’t have to bus home at the lunch hour with the windchill licking at my cheeks, let the pups out, walk them, and then rush back to the stop hoping that the bus wouldn’t be early and leave me stranded downtown for the better part of an hour. I didn’t have to sleepily hop over baby gates, or ignore being pounced on while I made my morning coffee. After dinner, I didn’t have a Mal to curl up with on the couch. I wasn’t so much as nipped at for 12 hours!
It was all very melodramatic and terrible.
They’re officially seven months old now, we’ve had them for four months, and their personalities are busting at the seams. Mal is boisterous as anything – but he’s all bark, no bite, and spends most of his time in our huge poured glass window informing passers by that they’re on his property. When he’s not on guard the little guy just collapses and becomes an incredibly calm, gentle energy to be around. when he’s quiet and needs much more physical contact than Ash does, we cuddle constantly. He pretty much completes my life and is what I meant when I said I wanted a dog.
Ash is independent as anything – dignified, sweet and cool. He’d rather chew on a bone while gazing out into the back yard than cuddle, but if I’m reading on the couch he’ll sneak cuddles by squeezing between me and the couch to drift asleep. And he’s ten times more obedient than Mal could ever hope to be. He’ll come, sit, stay, and quote Shakespeare. But he’ll be quizzing you on it later to make sure that you were listening.
Ash has taken the high road in his recovery from being neutered, by constantly pouting, reminding us that we did this to him.

And while Mal wasn’t phased in the least by the whole experience, having his dew claw removed means he’s had 2 trips to the vet over the past couple days after ripping his stitches out and as a result his cone has tripled in size, he’s on antibiotics, and has to wear a sock like it’s a thigh high boot when he’s out side. And he’s in solitary confinement. He’s the height of pathetic, it’s quite sad.

Survey says that people hate posts about cats, but I think this one will win the sympathy vote. Oliver is doing very well and is in good spirits, he has a heat pad under him at all times and is milking this whole “lost a limb” thing for all that it’s worth. He speaks to you only if you come bearing gifts. So we come bearing gifts.

Wow. That’s a lot of injury in a lot of sweet little bodies! I hope all of the babies are all healed up quickly. How long till Oliver can get up and about again?
Your description of the dogs sounds a lot like my two beasts. One is very needy and the other independent. But both are the loves of my life.
this officially wins the award for most adorable post EVER. here’s wishing all your babies a quick recovery!! :)
Awwww! I love the bing bing bing noise dogs make while running with a cone around their neck!
I knew that cat would milk it for all it’s worth! Our cat seriously did the exact same thing!
Mal’s huge cone is pretty funny. Poor boy!
There’s a three-legged dog in our neighborhood. He’s only a couple years old and gets along quite well. I bet your mom’s cat will be back to good in no time. Same with your ultra-pathetic pups.
Awwwww!! All so adorable and cute! I need a pup to cuddle with now.
Glda the pups are doing well. Jack, my dog, was quite the baby after his neutering. It doesn’t help the fact that when I rescued him, the Humane Society failed to notice he had already been neuterd so he went under anesthesia for no reason.
Glad your mom’s cat is doing well. I can’t imagine how traumatic it must be for him. :( Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Poor Mal – we had Stella’s dew claws removed without actually knowing what the process involved (I thought they’d just pull it out. I had such a meltdown when I googled it (at work. the day of the surgery. after my pup was already at the vet.)
I hope Mal can ditch the cone soon, poor thing.
Oh! The poor babies! I’ve never used the Elizabethan collars for ours, but as annoying as it must be for them, they look ridiculously adorable! All three will be back to their normal selves in no time!
I’m glad to hear the puppies are back home. I hope all the pets in your life feel better soon!
i was feel so sad for pups in the cones. it’s for their own good right?
I WISH WE LIVED IN THE SAME CITY!!!!!! EFF!
Your puppies are so cute. And I’m so glad that Oliver’s doing well. We had a 3-legged dog growing up and he was wonderful. It’s a little hard for them to get around at first, but they get used to it.
Awwww!!! Last year one of my dogs almost died because she got an infection in her uterus, but we got her operated right on time and she survived! (she’s very old, almost 14 years, so it was really hard to operate her without having the risk of the anaesthetics).
Oh, cones! I know how much cats hate cones. Chloe started taking to walking backwards in the hopes she could walk her way out of it but then kept crashing into things :( And David’s little one had similar cone fright :( I hope your little guys are dealing with them better! And yay for Oliver doing well :)
Whoa! That’s a giant cone! Poor pup. :( And look at lil Oliver! Hope all the babies get better ASAP!
Aw I love your puppies!
Edie will be getting spayed soon. We decided to wait until she calmed down a bit because the hyperness and the Winston-ness would have been a horrible mix with stitches. Plus, the thought of surgery scares me event though it’s routine for the vet!
i’m glad you did a pup update. I love reading about these little guys!
