I have to say it – I’m an out and out Halloween fanatic.
Not in any of the “cool” ways that drive Nilsa nuts. I mean I guess I could get loaded and try to carve pumpkins, but it just wouldn’t be the same. Here’s the thing – in some ways I’m cool & altern-chic (NO REALLY! Come on!) – until last year I had my ears stretched to a zero guage, I’ve written for our local GLBT magazine, I’ve got a big mother of a tattoo, I can talk philosophy, city planning, Islam, World of Warcraft, or cross stitching. Kinda cool in my books!
And then there are things about me that are really lame – which is most of what you all are bombarded with. I like to knit and bake! I make cards and scrapbook! I get concerned about things like the moths that were escaping into our home at night, because I didn’t want them inside but I also didn’t want them to starve to death so I googled what they eat. Turns out nothing as adults – my conscience is clean! The torture porn scary movies that are out in theatres won’t give me nightmares for months, because I will leave the theatre crying before watching 20 mins – I can’t separate myself from what I watch. I smile at everyone on the bus and on the street who makes eye contact with me, because I remember times when smiles would honestly make or break my day. I’m such an INFJ it drives me up the wall!
I’m very un-cool sometimes.
So it makes sense that the part of Halloween I like is the wildly lame part. I love carving pumpkins, handing out candy to kids, renting cheesy movies like Evil Dead (where one of our puppy’s names – Ash – comes from) and curling up on the couch with a spread of kettle corn, chips, candy and a couple SoCo & Cokes. I love the cheesy scares, the excitement of the kids, and meeting the rest of our neighbours. And it’s our first Halloween where we are actually going to get trick or treaters!
It’s going to be so lame and I’m going to be so excited!! I’ll post the carving pictures before the weekend – hope your Halloween is whatever you want it to me – a non-event, terrifying, or excessively lame.

I don’t think you are uncool at all, Kyla. I think that every bit of coolness that anyone has is a direct result of his or her dorkiness. I might think this only because I am the Queen Dork, but I do believe it.

First of all, I admire how early you post your blogs!
With regards to what you consider lame… baking, being crafty in terms of scrapbooking and making cards, I find that many men in the United States find it actually cool that girls can do these things. I’m not saying a women’s place is in the home by any means, but it seems that they are endlessly fascinated that we can make pictures, glitter, stickers, fun paper and other ridiculous odds and ends into a really awesome scrapbook. And baking? Well, it appears to knock their socks off. So I don’t think it’s lame. I think it’s kind of cool in the sense that we stand out from the rest.
I was also super excited to see cross-stitching make an appearance on your blog. I am working, very slowly, on a blanket that I hope to someday give to my child or whoever in my family has a baby first! So does that make me cool? (just kidding)
As for my Halloween, I’m camping that night with some friends. Sounds like Blair Witch/horror movie waiting to happen I suppose…

I can’t do scary movies, but I love Halloween for all the same reasons! I have yet to carve a pumpkin this year, I’m actually on my way out to find one. It’s the boyfriend’s first ever pumpkin-carving experience (gasp!) so I have to wait for him to get off work…at a Halloween store. :)

Oh my, I am an INFJ too! I love finding fellow INFJ’s, because truly we are the only ones who can truly understand each other (in my book). No one else can just “Get it” and “get me” like a fellow INFJ. It’s when I try to describe why I feel certain things and get emotional or wrapped around situations that other people laugh/pass up/don’t understand. I focus on things that no one else seemingly sees. I remember when I was 13 (and before I knew of my INFJ status) I felt so crazy sometimes, like I understood and felt things that no one else did. I remember feeling isolated.
As for the movie thing..I can definitely go in that direction. For example: Sin City? OMFG. Cannot watch that. I saw that in theaters with all of my good friends, and afterwards everyone was chatting about how it was incredible and awesome, and I was crying. I couldn’t even explain fully why I was crying. It disturbed me so much that I had to go home afterwards. Everyone thought I was pretty much a freak/acting like a baby. They just don’t UNDERSTAND.
Wauugghhh, haha. I’m so glad to know that you get it, though. If I’m having a moment, I will talk to you about it. Feel free to do the same. I feel like we’re in a club that basically no one else is in!

I don’t have relatives in Canada, but perhaps we were separated at birth.
I love all people all the time, even the ones that wear too much perfume on the train or that have crabby babies in the grocery store.
I bake, I knit, I sew, I get pierced, I get tatts, I love being alone as much as I love the companionship of my husband and I can’t get away from compelling stories. If I wasn’t deaf I could listen to other people forever without worrying about getting a word in.
